or just a commander spot in the tank, there is more than only 2men in a real Jagdpanther for instance

Yeah the commander could do it.

The problem is that the sights of most German tanks were adjustable and as far as I know there is no way to correctly implement this in the BF2 engine. So it would only really be of use on those Allied tanks which have fixed sights with range markings.

Anyways Redrew my shitty picture Incase someone doesn't understand how it works...

According to Trig tan (angle) = opposite/adjacent. so say you have a 0.7m range finder you aim it at a target and line up the 2 images you see. Now knowing that the angle that the mirror turned to is 89.87 degrees you simply calculate tan(89.87) x .7 to get distance = 308.5 meters to target. Luckily the angle reading is already done for you by the manufactors (Has to be pretty accurate since distances would probably vary by max 1 degree.) and instead of having to read angles it is already converted into distance to target for you.
