Before the flamewar begins, i DID do a search, but the only threads I found were misc. suggestions or long forgotten, so sry in advance but i wanted to get an answer to this.

Anyways, i put a new system together and loaded up FH2 again after a long break, and one of the things i noticed most was the depth of field effect(Whoever made that possible by the way, amazing job i love it), and it got me thinking, since we have actual depth of field in FH now, mebbe its time to make all the iron sights the same as the pistol/AT Rifle ones, i mean, full 3D. The reason we had the 2D/3D setup was because it simulated depth of field, but it seems to me we dont need that anymore because we have the effect in-game. And given that when bringing up the IS retains a part of the 3D model "behind" the art, i.e. the front sight. Mebbe its time to go all the way with them and make the full because imho, full 3D + depth of field(as in 2.1 pistols) looks and feels much better than the flat textures.

Anyways just my thoughts, you guys?

They've tried to do this before, it didn't quite work out. Since I don't think you can specifically blur a 3d object (only parts of the screen) the entire thing was 3d and it looked like you could focus on three different points at once (obviously impossible). So IMO it just works better to use the 2d rear sights.

the depth of field we got is only "simulated", basically it just blurs the outer parts of the vision field in the IS/zoom mode.

The depth of field shader is not dynamic like other games, it is simply just a texture that is overlayed with the 2d sight texture.

It doesn't work on a 3d sight.

I think the only advantage that a fully 3D iron sight has over its hybrid cousins is demonstrated with the boys rifle: a bolt action rifle where the animation of the bolt is played before returning back to 'aim' mode without 'leaving' ironsight mode; unlike the standard rifles, where the bolt is only worked once the ironsight is turned off.
