What was the range of such a flame-throwing Hanomag? I wouldn´t want to sit in one of them. One hit and BOOM you experience what your victims experience when you hit them. Plus the troops seem to be a bit uncoverd o0

Plus the Crew did have armoured shields in front of the hanomags, same type as the one for the MG in front (yes, it also has the normal mg compliment :)

All these flamethrowers got a problem: They plain suck. The range is only 35 meters. They are originally designed for combat in urban areas.

But all variants proved to be pretty useless.

At first the Panzer II 'Flamingo'. Only 155 have been produced. Follow-up-orders were cancelled. The next variant was the Panzer III, of which 100 had been produced for Stalingrad. The tanks finally saw action in summer 1943 during the Kursk operation. They proved to be useless in the open area and were re-equiped with the KwK guns. Finally that SdKfz. 251/16 was produced after the landings in Normandy. I doubt that it was very useful.

I've seen that the 251 version was prob the most commonly used, and the only successful one. As it was an APC, it was used as infy support in buildings and in the hedgerows, where its short range of 70m was overcome by close in areas. All in all, it does seem to be useful, enough that I've seen it being shown in Panzergrenaidier training films.

The Sd.Kfz.251/16 entered service in early 1943, originally based on the Ausf.C.

we must keep in mind that the flamethrower is a specialized weapon, not a general purpose one like a battle tank. it has one thing it is great at, and if used improperly, yes, it sucks.
