Hey everyone, i was deciding whether i should upgrade from a 17inch crt to a 15 inch TFT. Is it worth it? Cos i was wondering if the 15inch will feel small compared to my 17 inch crt. Thank for al ure help.

there are a number of factors to consider when upgrading to a smaller monitor

Its noramlly good idea if you have a constructive use for the space you will save with a TFT monitor if your old monitor displays 16bit color in 800x600 its normally a good idea to get something that does a little more.

however the TFT monior is a lot easier to knock off of the desk (experience ;)) and is a lot lighter. it is also a lot weaker and i, to this day, have never touched the front of mine since the day i got it :p

CRT monitors are a bit stronger and heavier, as well as taking up more room, based on these factors the choice is yours. I prefer my TFT to the CRT i used to have, but they were the same size corner to corner so it wsnt hard to adapt

anytime you downgrade your monitor it will always feel smaller i once had a 21' crt, and downed it to 17" . it was small.. and it kinda sucked. so i had to save up money again for a new 21" .. but this time its LCD :)

There's also a quality issue to consider. CTR monitors are better than TFTs regarding the representation of light. This is because a CTR is a normal monitor with a picture tube and a TFT uses a digital signal to form the light (dunno how else to describe this...). Light travels faster than the digital signal and the quality is better because the light in the CTR is, well, light. Also consider that you can get CTR monitors with a flat picture tube which looks like TFT. It is better for the eyes to look at a flat screen than to look at a bended screen. In my humble opinion the only thing a flat screen is good for is the saved space on the desktop. Oh, and why would you want a smaller monitor?

thanks for all ure help. The thing is that im getting a new pc and 17inch tft is too expensive for me. My 17inch crt takes up loads of room on my desk which is another reason for why i want a tft. i heard that the 15inch tft wont exactly feel smaller cos my 17 inch crt only has a 16 inch viewing space thing.

I think you should spend whatever space is required to keep a 17" monitor. It is unpleasant to look at a small monitor. If you are having problems with the space on you desktop, then save the money from the TFT and buy a larger desk...

Refresh rates are also a factor. A TFT will not be able to refresh as fast as a CRT monitor, and there is always the complaint of not being able to view the screen at all angles. It doesn, however, substantially reduce glare. Really, it just depends on where you're going to put it....

Oh yeah, definitely. I have a 19" CTR with a flat screen and it's really good.
