I might have said this a few years ago when I first joined the FH forums. At the time, it was probably before the first beta of FH even existed.
I heard rumors that the Japanese Navy had a submarine aircraft carrier. It stored around 3 planes. If that were to be in FH it would've required some tinkering with the planes inside the sub in case the sub dives. Also the submarine carrier would have an open/close hangar door and catapult.
Yes the rumors are in fact correct. The Japanese Navy wanted to bomb the Panama Canal and San Diego with it. Called I-400
THAT IS AWESOME thats the first time ive seen that, great idea those japanese, its kinda scary that they coulda bombed the panama canal and san diego that dr. fritz said ^^^^
Holy @#$% I'm a huge history buff when it comes to WWII and even I haven't heard of that thing! Did they ever start construction of it, or did it only get as far as the concept stage?
From what I know, it was about to complete the mission of bombing Panama when the war ended or something like that.
I might have an idea of how to implement it in FH. The commander of the sub would have to make the plane spawn on the sub just like an half track makes an MG spawns. This way the sub will be able to dive and deploy planes after. I don't think it could work otherwise.
to drop the japanese nuke over america, but the german uboat carrying the nuclear secret of germany on route to japan was captured its not gonna drop a 500 kilo bomb over the panama canal, its a little bit over kill for a submarine carrier that crossed the pacific ocean
Japan had 7 types of subs that carried aircraft.
The Type B1 was the most common. The I-19 which sank the US carrier Wasp was a Type B1. 20 Subs of this class were lauched and only one survived the war. It carried opne seaplane. Some of the Subs of the Type B2 class were modified later in the war to carry Kaitens.
The Sen Toku , aka the I-400 class, were beasts. There were three built and all three survived the war. They displaced 5,233 tons afloat and 6,560 tons. A US WW2 Light crusier weighed around 6,000tons.
The I-400's were indeed intended to bomb the Panama canal and carried 3 Aichi M6A1 Seiran floatplane bombers. The I-400's never attacked the Panama Canal. Instead two boats were reassigned to expend their 6 aircraft and Kaiten's on Kamikaze attacks on the USN fleet anchorage at Ulithi Atoll. A total waste of its ability.
Jesus Christ, look at that thing... I knew that Germany considered the concept of submersible battleships when they were deciding how to go about rebuilding the kriegsmarine, but the idea was scrapped. But that is just, wow.
Only two of the three I-400 class completed were completed as Submrine Carriers, the I-400 and I-401. The I-402 was completed as a Submarine Tanker, while the I-403 and '404 were never completed. The planned raid on the Panama Canal comprised the 1st Submarine Flotilla and the 631st Air Corps and involved both I-400 and '401, each carrying three M6A1's, as well as two AM Class submarines, the I-13 and '14 both carrying a pair of M6A1's. Of the 10 Seirans 6 were to have carried torpedoes and four were to have carried a single bomb.
