Do the subs not have sonars in FH? I've never really been interested in using them (Submarines, IMO, just don't work in the BF engine) but a sonar, complete with the *blip* sound when you're in the cockpit, would be awesome.

there is a sonar, it comes on when near a ship and gets louder as you get closer

the destroyers have sonar specifically for hunting subs -- a sub would hear the sonar pinging. I don't think WWII subs employed it (but don't quote me)

'[SYN Ace']I've seen still photos of Allied planes strafing surfaced U-boats -- don't know what caliber guns they were using or how much damage they caused.

Yes, as far as I know it was common for the allied planes to strafe U-Boats that didn't manage to submerge in time, but I think that would mostly cause only some minor damage to the sub and was rather be targeted to kill the crew on the bridge and guns. The damage planes do against subs in FH seems quite over the top.

It would be nice for the spawn to shut down when one of the positions is filled. If this isn't possible, the next best option would be to remove the spawn and force the player to use a landing craft to reach the sub. Nothing's more annoying than using the deck gun on a pesky landing craft, only to have some idiot steal the sub.

One thing I find a little unrealistic is that 20mm plane cannons can take a sub out with just two fly overs. They take crazy damage from such small caliber guns.

0.50 cal MGs can sink you too. I'm no expert, but this does seem a little unlikely IRL.

I believe the FH team set it up so ALL vehicles trigger the pinging sound for subs, since they couldn't add sonar to the subs. BTW, frederf, do you have the box for Silent Hunter 3? I am interested in getting it, but I dont know the specs. Could you tell me what they are?

As for drowning crewmembers, you could add something that's been suggested in the past: a deployable raft. The driver can't do it, as he's got primary and secondary fire both used for torpedoes, but the tower MGers could both have one raft to deploy each, with secondary fire. If the driver is too nervous to hop onto an MG to deploy it for them because he's afraid somebody will steal it, at least one of the soon to be shark-bait crewmen could quickly hop on and deploy the raft before the thing dives completely. Is there any way to have the sub give off a dive alarm while the driver has their dive button depressed?
