Japan, while using the Kamakaze planes, they also used a suicide submarine, one of the types named Kaiten. They did use these in the war, and I think they did manage to sink one ship with it. It think it had about 4 times the amount of torpedoes on a regular submarine, and it was manned by one person, and once you got into the torpedoe, there was no way out of it, the driver would then drive itself into one of the ships. I can't find a good picture of it, though.

IIRC the USS Mississinewa feet tanker was sunk and there was the USS Indianapolis.

Kaitens were not minisubs so much as manned torpedoes. They had to be carried into action by a mother sub and many of these were sunk before reaching their launch point.

It was sunk when it was hit by 2 kaitens, one amidships taking out the control computers (mechanical, of course) and the other slicing 60 feet off the bow. The boilers and engines could not be stopped, so it kept plowing into the water and one by one compartments were destroyed. Out of the 1,900 men aboard only 315 survived the sinking and the 5 days at sea. It was not sunk by a Japanese submarine. And please do not use the word Jap, it insults japanese people.

Yes, the Indianapolis was the flagship of the 5th something-or-other in the Navy; but I heard on the Last Days of WWII that it was sunk by two torpedoes, and that the Japs only had the Kaitens at the ready in case the ship didn't sink.
