Tanks: Comanders position:

I just had the idea to add a Commanders position to the tanks.

You know IRL tanks were operated be not just one soldier but driver, gunner, and commander at least. His job was to look out of the top hatch and give targets.

When maning this position you should have a binocular to use and look around (and of course spot targets).

Maybe this is onle possible for tanks without cuploa MG?

Also a more far reaching chaning would be to make tanks 2 person operated. Since its very hard to have coordinate 2 ppl it could be made that in driver view, cou can drive and when switching to crosshair view you can aim and shoot.

Also, the main canon and the coax should be seperated. The gunner still controls both, but he would have to switch between them like switching AntiAir/AntiGround ammo on the 88. the Coax would no longer have the same aiming as the canon.

I know this makes take operating a lot harder but it was!

This could come with changes to the anti armor abilities of infantry which some ppl find too effective (but I don't unter the current circumstances where un guy controls driving and 2 weapons at the same time.

There are some problems to be solved around this, but what do you think?

so you want to seperate the gunner and driver? id hate to tell you this, but this isnt a total realism mod, these things wont be seperated any time soon, if you want that, you need to go to mods like xwwwII or whatever its called

Ahh, would be great for MP but not so great in SP. Even 'hardcore' tank sims such as Steel Beasts, Panzer Elite and (perhaps) M1TP2 have some compromises in terms of gameplay in this area...(you have the gunner's, commander's or driver's view but can move the tank through the arrow keys from anywhere)

I definitely think the guy sticking out of the turret should be given a better 'commander' role with bino spotting and target acquisition, movement commands based on better view (by default anyway) etc.

Still, I'm always in favour of the realism faction ;)

Would it be possible to give the top gunner a binoculars function with right-click? Separate driver/gunner may be more realistic overall, but wouldn't help this game IMO. A lot of things are abstracted in this game, and one of them is tank crews. With a separate driver/gunner, you lose the functionality of this abstraction. IRL, a tank would never be sent into battle with 1 crewmember, yet if you have separate driver/gunner, this will happen regularly, and to me, that's more unrealistic than giving one person the functionality of a whole tank crew. At least with what we have currently, the tanks behave realistically (ie, turret can scan for targets while tank is moving, or tank can get the heck out of Dodge, covering it's retreat with suppressive fire.) Also, if you need 2 people to use a tank effectively, you have less infantry on the battlefield, and the tank/inf ratio is already skewed.

There already is a commander position on StuG (position 3). I would very much like to see the same in other tanks too, since traversing the turret can be too slow and sitting in the machinegun is hardly safe - there's a reason the commanders had periscopes.

Good points about Inf / tank ratio and usability of tanks with 2 ppl. (Maybe there are too many tanks on the maps?)

It would be very hard to coordinate 2 ppl or if you have an active commander when he commands 2 and there would be many changes needed to make it playable again and require much more teamplay. Agreed.

I guess to make my suggestions work they would have to be many other changes made (but thats the case with most my suggestions because some smaller changes affect big time sometimes.) If a tank had 1 driver 1 gunner and 1 commander, (Always talking tanks where this would apply, P4 or Tiger, Sherman...!?) the commander able to man the cuppola or binocs or covered position, the gunner driving, maybe also manning the forwards mg and the gunner having the main canon and the mg then it would be difficult to operate a tank.

To make it easier the Commander could be able to spot awith binocular combined with giving an order where the gunner and driver get a mark where an enemy is. e.g. "Tank spotted, 10 o'clock"

i suggest a system like in DC realism the commander drives the tank and has a 360 degree rotating view but is inside the tank (like a periscope) but instead of having weapondry simply have the primary fire say GUNNER TARGET LEFT and secondary fire as GUNNER TARGET RIGHT or what ever you would like to say, this would work well excepet on most pub servers the only thing people wanna do is get a high kill count you rarely see team work and if you do see it its about 3 people that know each other doing it. but i reackon the commander position idea would be cool

isn't it opposite? not enough infantry?

from the .66-thread.

also, the system carter describes seems okey too, but it makes arty spotting impossible (if that was desired)

I agree. I would love to see this implemented.
