Hi,I got a real good buy on winXP and I'd like to upgrade my old win98 computer to XP.But I've been told by a service guy that I can't just upgrade, first I have to format my harddrive then install XP.Excause me its WinXP pro,if that makes a difference.I did try to install it anyway and everythings fine till it tells me to reboot, than the winxp screen flashed and the screen goes black and stayes that way.I have to turn off the computer then when I turn it on again I have to choose the option to go back to Win98.This is my five year old Alienware which I'd like as my second computer, any help would be welcome.Thank you. :uhm: Oh ya,its a 1.2t-bird with 256 ram,G4 ti4400 vidio card.

Well, your system specs are fine, so no problems there. if i were to guess, and it is only a guess, I would say that your win98 (is it first or second edition?) has a Fat32 format and winXP pro has a NFTS format. this would mean that you would have to format your Hard drive instead of just doing a plain update from 98 to XP pro. Also, It sounds like your computer is acting like it has two different operating systems instead of one (which is possible, and many people like running two different operating systems instead of one). So, it sounds like you are going to have to format your hard drive and then install XP pro, which is better then just doing an update. However, I only run XP home edition, so I don't know the differences between home edition and pro, mainly because I never looked.

Like I said, this is only a guess, so I might be wrong, but to me at least, that is what sounds like the problem is

Hi,thank you, thats pretty much what the service guy said.I'm pretty sure I have the first vertion of win98.I guess if I want XP pro installed I have to format and start from scratch.I've never tried that before but I guess I can't mess it up to bad.

Formating the harddisc is also a good way to clean up you system; get rid of evrythig you don't want to save and begin all over again...

What would be a good place to get step by step directions on how to go about formating and installing XP pro?The simpler the better.

First of all u have to make sure that the version of XP u have IS NOT the UPGRADE version.....check the box top right to see if it says UPGRADE or full version......if it is the full version here is what u do-------> boot your comp with the 98 that u have been using, go in control panel, add/remove programs and click the 'startup disk' tab....insert a floppy disk into your floppy drive, it doesnt matter if anything is saved to it becuz it will automatically be deleted. click 'create disk'.......after disk is created restart your comp with floppy disk inserted.....a menu will come up will comp is still in real mode, choose 'boot without cdrom support'.......a DOS propt will come up and u type 'cd\' (without the ' ' marks).....then type 'format c:' or whatever your hard drive letter is.....it will ask u of your sure u wanna do this hit 'y' and press enter.....viola your hard disk will be good as new and ready to install XP.... after the format sequence is done insert your XP cd and go from there installing XP.......

well i am not sure if you have to but it is probably better that you do anyway. You can burn your IE favorites and any files you want to a disk so u can have them with XP

Upgrading windows without formating drives will work, but isnt reccomended. As mentioned before, burn you important stuff to a couple of cds, then do a clean install. Xp is a ram eater though, so 384 MB RAM might be worth upgrading..
