Yesterday Mare Nostrum beta was released for Red Orchestra and I just had to test it. Well they had four maps in their release and one of them happened to be their version of Bardia. Well it was drastically different than one in FH2. That made me think that is FH2 Bardia based on the real town or is it just umm... dont like to use this word but... "fantasy" (no offense ment to Lobo and Vic Colfari).

I know that most maps in FH2 are based on their real locations and Mersa Matruh being the best example of this. Well the Bardia in Mare Nostrum was so drastically different that it made me wonder which version is more accurate. That Bardia was situated in high cliffs overlooking the sea and germans had trenches dug in the outskirts of the town and there was no river like in FH2 and harbor was nowhere to be seen.

The town changed hands a few time, it could be possible that both mods reflect a different take. While Mare nostrom may include the port being assaulted from the ocean by the 7th Cruiser Squadron of the Mediteranean, FH2's probably is a map based on the assault by Australian troops from the land into the town, instead of by sea.

I find this all very interesting. These kinds of things might be nice to have written down for each map. Perhaps MapFacts.txt provided with the game files as well as in the website.

Other alternative for learning stuff like this for me and the likes of me, is to read several dozen of books ;)

Both maps are based on the real Bardia. Mare Nostrum's map is about Upper Bardia and FH2's maps is about Lower Bardia. The larger part of the town was located on top of the cliffs, but the main military structures and the small harbour were down at sea level.

Here's a picture is illustate the difference: bardiarx6.jpg

Though neither scenario is essentially very historically accurate. Bardia had a large defensive perimeter and both in January 1941 and in January 1942 when the allies broke through the defences the defending axis forces surrendered. So there wasn't actually any fighting in the town itself.

Cool. I thought it might something like this as FH2 Bardia has that road going up to those cliffs and you can see some buildings there too.

Thanks for quick answer.

Beta was okay. It does not have alot of content but its really good foundation to build up. Their tommy models are well done but weapons seem bit roughly made but its not big deal but they do stand out a bit when comparing to german weapons which are stock RO material. But I think they are going to improve them as this is just beta. I liked the fact that you could reload one clip at time when using enfield so its not like in FH2 where you are forced to reload both.

Beta only had four maps: Bardia, Tobruk Central, Akaba and Fallen Empire.

Bardia was like I descriped about the city and its outer defeces, brits have universal carriers which they can use to storm german strench system after that you advance to Bardia itself which is nicely modeled.

Akaba is about some town in Egypt which allies attack during night. It has some elements of FH2's Operation Hyacint map because they both happen in night and battle for the city is very similar (Akaba only has the city so brits are not advancing towards it like in Hyacint map). It offers some nice CQB action and looks great.

Tobruk Central is about as name suggest the Tobruk city. IMO its the best map and it looks cool too. RO has always been at its best (graphically) when focusing in city maps and its shows here really well.

Fallen Empire depicts german forces retreating after the defeat at El Alamein. They have set up some crude defenses around roman ruins.

All these four maps focus only on infantry combat and only vehicles are universal carriers but its not big deal as infantry action is really well done in RO. Ohh and there is very limited amount of weapons present: for brits there is enfield, bren and thompson (description says that it comes with either 30 box or 50 drum but I only get the box) and for germans its k98, mp40, mg34 and luger/walther + grenades for both sides.

Its a good start in my opinion and when they get the vehicles and fixed at guns in game it will be better. I'm excited to see how well their version of Grant pwns poor germans or can I kill something with their 2pdr (I think it will be even harder because RO's more complicated simulation of tank combat).

EDIT: Moose you butchered my name!! :bawl: I don't want to be Moskau... its sounds like Moscow =p

makes sense now, i think this is a good thread, i find it interesting to compare different games, or mods takes on different battles, and especially in this case because both are accurate representations but in different parts and times of the same place. This is
