It's always been one of my joys in all the Battlefield games to shoot down airplanes. The original overpowered AA guns in vanilla BF1942 went through several changes with each patch; a little more now, a little less...

The various FH AA and AAA weapons have varied too from map to map it seems. On some, the 4-barreled Vierling was just over-the-top, while on others the 88mm FLAK gun was all but useless.

Last night, I got tired of having my tanks blown up by Hurricanes and decided to cause them some grief. I took out one of those mobile AA armored cars and concentrated on finding good places to hide. Like, in a crater, or behind a big rock. Overlooking one of our fire-bases, where the pesky Allied pilots were sure to come snooping. Well, I had great fun shooting at Hurricanes. Did not score one kill. Oh, lots of hits. Nice graphic of the explosion; big puff of smoke, Hurricane would start smoking... And he'd just fly off somewhere, unconcerned. The Hurri pilots were doing seriously dumb things too, like looping. nice, almost motionless stall at the top of the loop; a perfect target. Still, not a single kill. Maybe these weapons need tweaking a bit... Now, the Bofors does well; it's quite deadly. Still, to compare equivalent damage with my recollection of the 20mm gun in WWII Online...This one needs a little more punch.

The weapons on the Opel Blitz are MG15s. They are 7.62mm. Four of them is horrendously weak in downing aircraft; that's why the P.11s in Poland didn't do so well against the Germans. They don't need to be tweaked.

All mounted AA seems to be effective for me, even the 88 (albeit, only the shieldless one is semi-useful). You just need to learn the lead and drop. You kow you're causing damage when you get the red hit indicater. Also, MGs can now dish out pain to planes. It takes longer, but it can count. Remember that MGs have a larger deviation and drop for the ground stuff. Plane mgs are pretty accurate. Also, make sure you are using AP ammo. For some reason (including tanks vs. planes) it seems that HE doesn't have as good as an effect on planes than AP.

Actually, they're 7.92mm. 7.62mm equals 0.30 cal and is not really used in German weapons.

i have one little grief about the 88 timed high explosive, i have seen numerous times where a hurricane flew right at me, i aim shoot, nothing...dead.

Sometimes the timed high explosive don't work and i don't believe i missed the planes when they are flying right at me. Makes me wonder if the proximity fuse is even working?

I have had tremendous success with the 88mm AA, racking up 125~ points with it alone, amounting to ~25 kills. it is an excellent AA weapon, and even with limited armor piercing (the one without shield) it has proven its worth to me.

Time-fuse HE works wonders.

EDIT: timed fuse and proximity fuse are two different shells, btw.

Pardon the noobish question, but is there a way to influence the detonation delay of the time-fuse HE ammo?

No, but you don't really need that. It works perfect the way it is.
