Here's the deal.

In patch 1.2 DICE broke BF2 such that the custom shaders we had written (which allowed us to efficiently make large vehicles such as ships) no longer worked (the shaders were now hardcoded to be loaded from the BF2 mod, whereas they previously were not). This change was made to accommodate the Special Forces expansion pack. DICE has been informed of this bug but have not yet acknowledged it, much less indicated that they plan to fix it.

We had a workaround in place which was working very well with a proof of concept Ark Royal taken from 0.7 and retextured to remove DICE textures:

beached.jpgtakeoff02.jpg

(This particular model is more efficient texture- and model-wise than DICE's HMMWV!)

Recently, though, we realised that this change was certain to fall foul of Punkbuster (which is some anti-cheating software generally installed with every copy of Battlefield 2 since forever and Battlefield 1942 since patch 1.5). We contacted Punkbuster asking if we could be accommodated. Today we got a fair answer that we couldn't, on the basis that if they did it for us then they'd have to do it for everyone.

Assuming that DICE will never fix this bug (which based on past experience, they will not), and Punkbuster will not change their minds, we now have the following options:

  • Release a mod which is not compatible with Punkbuster :(
  • Throw a bunch of content away and conclude that BF2 cannot do good quality, large vehicles :(
  • Redo a bunch of content to make it grossly less efficient, probably to the point where these things are unplayable and we have to throw it away :(

This poll is to determine whether our prospective players are willing to forgoe punkbuster.

Oh man, this is really bad news..

I can live without punkbuster, but it means servers will have to subject their players to alot more scrutiny, and some communities might even password theirs. Because without PB, any old hack will work, forever.

Punk buster is useless anyhow. Go for it.

Ps: The deck texture for the ark royal looks wonderful. :D

Ehm, no. It actually keeps hacking in check to some extent, because caught hacks get blacklisted, PB can then detect and ban. Without PB, you can just start a .com site, advertise your FH2 hacks everywhere, and it cannot be stopped.

Are server admins still able to ban people without PB?

Neither have i, alot of kicks, though. And really, hacking might be a very large problem, especially during clan play. :/

Edit:

Ctz, you might want to get a mod to add some extra poll options, i doubt anyone is happy about the lacking PB support, but we might have to accept it. :P
