Sure, what do you do? Models? Skins? Maps?
You learn stuff on your own time, if you show the devs you can do something top notch over the top quality, they probably will let you in.

I suggest that you figure out what you like to do, then try to get some practice, either on your own, or maybe doing some collaborative work with a mapper. Then, when you have figured out if you like modding, and have a little experience, maybe you can try joining a mod.
Not to sound discouraging or anything, but modding is really, REALLY hard. If you've never tried it before and are just starting, it will take perhaps a couple of years of dedication before you can do something really good...
Actaully it's not that hard, but yeah, learning stuff takes time, not whole years though. Within those you just polish your skills.
