This was originally intended as a response to this thread, but it soon changed to a more general post (or rant if you like).

A few friendly hints and things to remember:

- Moderators are not your support teacher. As a registered user, it is your responsibility to know the rules (which you agree to when you sign up). Consequently, it also your responsibility to follow said rules. You don't get warned in advance if you don't follow the signature rules. They are so simple that you should just do it without any fuss (z0mg my sig was only 1 pixels over the limit!!!!11shift+one). Everything has rules, even this forum.

- Forum staffers (including me) don't get paid. Everything is done by volunteers who spend countless hours on this place. All they get in return for their work is people bitching and whining all day long; “Fuck you, why was my thread moved?!” Remember that next time you feel unjustly treated.

- Many people seem to be uncertain about the hierarchy of these forums so here's the short version: Moderator -> Super Moderator -> Administrator. This means that if you have an issue with something going on in a forum, you contact the moderator(s) for that forum (same if you have an issue with a Moderator decision, contact the guy who did it). If you don't get a response, you try one more time and if that yields no result, you try a Super Moderator. If, by some fluke accident, an issue cannot be resolved by a Super Moderator, you can contact an administrator. However when you do that, remember that an Administrator's word is always final. The all-American "Let me speak to your supervisor" thing doesn't work. Administrators are supervisors and a 'no' from them means ‘no’. (You’d be surprised at how many people have problems with that…..).

- Rules and regulations....... *drum roll* The rules of this place are made by (surprise!!!) the forum administration. and bearing in mind my previous comment about the Administrator's word being final, the forum rules are not up for discussion. You register here and you follow the rules whether you agree with them or not. Trust me, a lot of thoughts and discussions go into the decision-making process. The rules are not just arbitrary decision made by one Administrator who woke up one morning thinking, “hmmm, today I think I’ll ban Nazi-related imagery from signatures”. You may not be able to see the wisdom in a particular decision and you may think that a particular rule is stupid, but remember that the rules are made by people who have to take the entire Gaming Forums into account, and a lot of factors that may be unknown to you have to factored into any decision-making process.

- The FH forums are not a self-governing unit that exists apart from the rest of the forums. No matter how much you’d like it to be so, it simply isn’t the case. For instance, the rules that apply to the (in this forum) little known general forum called The Pub also apply here. And when the forum signature rules are changed, the changes are also in affect in the FH forums. The FH Moderators work to uphold the same rules as the Moderators in the Call of Duty forums or the Star Wars: Jedi Knight Series forums. The names of FH Moderators may be well known to you from the game as Devs or testers, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re still working under the same rules on this forum. So when you think that they’re being too strict with the rules, remember that they are so because they have been told to be so by the Administrators.

- When a thread is move somewhere out of the FH, it is usually to a specific forum for the thread’s topic. The Moderator moves it in good faith in order to keep the forums tidy and to broaden the audience for a thread if it is particularly interesting or well formulated (“If I move this thread to the Pub, more people will benefit from it and will be able to take part in the discussion”). They are not out to kill the thread. When you look at it, there is no problem here. However, when the problems do occur, it is because that more often than not, you guys are unwilling leave the FH forums and venture outside in the real world (read: the rest of the forums). Many of these strictness issues could be easily avoided of you were just willing to use the other general forums. However, you insist on sitting in your own cosy little corner of the forums and just let the world sail by completely unaffected by what happens elsewhere.

- The technical issues are not always under our direct control and it is not always within our powers to correct them. Slow loading speeds, post jumps, search queries bugs etc. are not excluded to ordinary members. Staffers get them too. These issues are just as annoying to us as they are to you. So when you yell at some poor Moderator because a page takes 30 sec to load, remember that it takes the same 30 sec for it to load for him. You may not get a reply to your individual reports of technical issues, but there is no reason for despair. Just bear in mind that when a Moderator seems distant or even uncaring when you report a technical issue, he has most likely already had 5 other people telling him the same thing. Also remember that we are aware of the technical issues as soon as we get the first report (and often before since we experience the same bugs as you do). 20 people screaming and yelling in the same thread about how annoying it is and how fucking stupid we are only serves to aggravate us because, guess what?, we have already noticed that we have a technical issue!

Here at the end I’m supposed to make some witty/clever/eloquent/leadership-like/administrative remark of sorts to tie an end to this rant. I won’t do that. All I'll say is that if you have any issue with a forum feature, you’re more than welcome to contact me. Yes, I do read the complaints and the insults and, yes, I do make replies. Don't forget to tip the waitress (Donutz) when you leave.

Dread out.

Good thread, I agree... like I'd have a choice.=D Maybe it's only a bit lacking any comments on the spamming case as I have a feeling that quite many staffers outside of FH forums detect it as one of the main problems here. Again though, rules concerning it are quite clear already. I have a question concerning Off-Topic sub forum. As AzH is no longer a staffer, his sticky was removed, but didn't the rules set by him say that members are allowed to discuss various compleately out of FH topic subjects, as long as it's not pure spam, violates forum rules or gets offensive towards someone? I know that as AzH resigned this might be irrelevant now, but if that's so, shouldn't there be a new sticky made for that sub forum? Also, doesn't every other game forum on FF have such off-topic section?

You're also talking to a bunch of WWII nuts with a disproportionate number of heavily (albeit historically accurately) armed lunatics among them. I know at least one of the reenactment that outfits people here participate in which has a tank, and another with an 88.

So while, let's face it, the "I pwn you thread" should be a mark of pride for all of GF, do you really _want_ us terrorizing the other OT forums? :-)))))

There is unless one another, compleately Off-Topic sub-forum, for Half-Life 2 games sub-forum, which also has Rant and Reaves sub-forum at the same time: http://www.gamingforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=497
