I've been griping about the BF/FH map quality for a long time. The first map with a "real" feel to it was the ancient Karelia one. Very good for its time. Then we got excellent maps like Operation Nordwind later. Again, felt real. No longer the golf courses of vanilla BF. I mean something like Guadalcanal map still makes me puke...come on, one of the most densely forested jungle islands on the planet and the BF map is a golf course. No vegetation. Ridiculous. Now, with the introduction of Eastern Blitz and Counterattack we're really seeing maps with unbelievably realistic feel to them. Mostly about the vegetation I'd say. Great job!!! Am more than slightly impressed by these maps. Now, I have a proposal though. On Counterattack you put in this cool wheatfield...love it...but it's in a "useless" place. No fighting generally happens in or really near it. If the wheatfield could be moved to the plain area after the downhill when coming to the north flag from the German base, then we'd really see situations where infantry would be crawling through a wheatfield. That'd be cool. Spraying the area with fire to suppress them. Other cool things obviously include the mine in Eastern Blitz and new explosions. New tanks are nice also. But maps are more important and this time we got a few really really cool ones. I bow to thee... LaDigue
Yes, new maps are extremely good.....especially blackknight....that map is just plain awesome
Great mod, and great maps! Nordwind is just so pretty. But to make a small criticism, IMO the mapmakers have gone a bit overboard in 0.66 as for size. Some maps are just too big. Eastern Blitz, Counterattack spring to mind. Hell, the excellent city in Blitz must be twice as big as Foy. And then you have eight times more landscape around it? Bigger is not always better.
one bitter word is 'flag placement' - eastern blitz looks GREAT but plays.. poorly? to long it takes to travel from starting base to the flag cluster [who goes after the lone flag anyway?] it took me also some time to actualy find the flags :) - it is the same problem as with omacha... looooong run only to get killed and run again...
it aplies to many, mostly new maps - they look great, but gameplay suffers strongly from weird flag placement - thank god that devs also see this problem, because some maps were altered in .66
Counterattack impressed me greatly, and I've been playing BF1942 since it launched.
I must say Kasserine Pass has probably the prettiest texture job yet, but GI_JOEJK's other map Falaise pocket's textures looks, well bad. Counterattack; very nice, a little dark for my taste as my monitor is crappy and it's hard too see. Eastern Blitz also very good, a bit too large perhaps. Battle isle was also fun, a few more transports would be nice.
