Forgotten Hope IRC channel
Seeing that this is one of the biggest forums for a battlefield 1942 mod I always thought it was strange that so few of you guys visited the Forgotten Hope mod irc channel on gamesurge.
I hope a little introduction to irc and a “how to connect” to the FH channel will maybe convince more of you guys to join the channel. Enough with the blabbering.
First of all, imagine your computer connecting to a server. Your computer can 'chat' with anyone else's computer that connects to that server. Now imagine that the server likes to chat as well, and it talks with about 20 other servers all the time. You are able to not only talk to the people chatting on your server, but you can talk with anyone on the servers that your server is chatting with. This is a network of chatrooms and servers called IRC (Internet Relay Chat).
Now you know what IRC is we can go to the connecting part, first of all you need an IRC client. There are lots of clients available, some browsers like Mozilla Firefox have a built in option to connect to irc servers. I will focus on mIRC since that is the most popular IRC client for windows users.
You can download mIRC here.
When you have installed and run mIRC you will get a popup window that looks like this (if you don’t get any popups go to file and click connect):
This is the main connection preferences box that pops up usually when you open the mIRC chat program. Highlight the 'Connect' menu on the left. Next fill in the fields with the following:
Full Name: Whatever you want, remember that anyone can see this! Email Address: Whatever you want, remember that anyone can see this! (does not have to be a legitimate email address email@example.com will work) Nickname: The name you want people to see you as in the chatroom. Alternative Nickname: The secondary nickname.
Note that you shouldn't mess with the irc server pulldown menu yet. It's the section with the 'Add' 'Edit' etc buttons.
Remember the email address, you’ll need it later on.
Here we've moved down the 'Connect' menu list to the 'Options' configuration panel. Just make sure everything looks like it does in the the pic if it isn’t already by default.
Now we get to the 'Local Info' section. Just make sure it looks the same as mine.
Configure your screen to contain the information mine does. For the 'User ID:' slot, fill it in with only the first section of the email address. (in case of my example, firstname.lastname@example.org, you use spam).
The firewall section is something most people will hopefully be able to ignore cause I don’t know how to configure this since I only have software running that acts as a firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro).
Ok it's time to click back on the 'Connect' menu list. Here we are going to configure a new server for you. The server we are going to set up will be the server(s) that are connected to the Forgotten Hope irc channel.
Click the 'Add' button. The smaller window on the right will appear.
Fill it in just like I did and click Add.
Now you can connect to gamesurge and the Forgotten Hope mod irc channel.
Upon running mIRC you will be connected to game surge. If somehow this won't work enter the following command line in the lower bar ‘/server irc.gamesurge.net’ (without the quotes).
A list of channels will appear, you can just add fhmod (I deleted all the others so it’s clearer to see).
Another way to connect to the Forgotten Hope channel is by means of entering a command line in the lowest bar where you also type your messages to others.
‘/join #fhmod’ (without the quotes) will put you in the fhmod channel.
I use a shortcut to directly connect to the FH channel you can create one to in the following way:
1. right click where you want the shortcut (for example on your desktop) 2. new/create -> shortcut 3. enter the following command line: irc://irc.gamesurge.net/fhmod 4. Give it a name, for instance FH channel
Now that we are connected some basic mIRC instructions:
This is how it looks when you are connected to IRC (it may look a little different for anybody else because I use a custom shell to enhance the functionality of mIRC, but it’s basicly the same).
You can type messages in the lower bar and they will appear on screen for everyone in the channel, similar to instant messengers or a chatbox on a website.
Basic commands :
/nick … = changes your nick into whatever you put in the place of the dots. /away … = will set you away, you can put a reason in the place of the dots. /quit = will quit you from irc.
There are more commands but these are the most usefull for now.
I hope this will help some people figure out how to connect to the FH channel, if not than I did alot of work for nothing. But if you don't try you will never succeed.
There is alot more to IRC than just chatting but you'll just have to find that out for yourselves.

Nice tutorial, Eg. This should be stickied.
Yeah no problem Lightning, when you want to connect to different servers choose the option of opening a new connection.
Nice tutorial, but if you want to get into FH IRC a bit faster just get Mozilla. Then find somebody who posts the link to the channel (maybe it's on the homepage) and click on it :)

Yeah I know but if you use irc alot than a program like mIRC is better.
Yes, but at first we have to get some people in the chat. And when they are hooked on IRC we can tell them how to get better looking skins :) Whenever I join the FH channel nothing is going on. I consider myself lucky if somebody answer to my greeting within 20 minutes :)
I think a little thread from a dev with the hint to meet in IRC before the release could change this though. Anyone remember the first release of EOD? My God, there were scores of people in IRC :) It was a lot of fun.

You're on the wrong server. Can't remember the one which FH channel is located on right now.. Check their homepage.
