You use the wakisashi to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) using harikiri (gut cut). A second (your trusted feif) stands close to remove your head with a single stroke of his or his lords ritually cleaned katana when either a signal is made or before the head touches the ground.

The actual gut cut normally is drawn across the gut (left to right or vica versa) then recentered @ the navel. The blade is then turned upwards towards the sternum and the blade is then drawn upwards into the heart. This is normally the time when the second removes the head as anymore disembowelling is considered unnecessary.
