LadigueI need to dig up my books, in the Finnish language, on the T-34s in Finnish use. Some of them were captured and some were bought from Germans. And all of them we're extensively modernized and, as I recall, one of the modernizations was replacing the gun sights with German optics. Goes to show that...as much as people like to blab about how wonderful the T34 was...it was a brute and simple design that needed extensive modernization (cupola, radios, gun sights etc.) to be really effective in the hands of an armored force employing more advanced tank tactics than the Soviet tank tactics. Radios, for example, were vastly more improtant than people tend to understand. To simplify a bit, an early war T34/C was, in a combat situation, not in contact with it peers...who the hell would open the hatch and do all that flag communication in a combat situation?...as well as relatively blind as regards its immediate surroundings, given the lack of a command cupola. Might sound like nuances, but were crucial ingredients for more advanced tank tactics. LaDigue

Interesting data. I wonder if the Finns recieved any of the German AP ammo made for the captured 76.2mm guns, the PAK36(r)? The German ammo was more effective and had much better penetration.

You are correct that the Jumbo has 4" but 4" is 101.6mm not 108mm.

We were also talking max front upper hull armor. Max frontal armor on a Jumbo is 7.04" on the gun manlet.

I like Shermans too. My fav being a M4A1E8/76(W)

here are other sources:

And my favorite for Sherman data: http://afvdb.50megs.com/usa/m4sherman.html

Neighbor Kidno no i mean the M4A3 E8 had 108mm

Your talking about the front transmission cover, thats 108mm. All the later model Shermans with the cast front transmission cover are 108mm, it has nothing to do with it being a M4A3E8.

Go to the afvdb link for the Shermans and browse away. Lots of good data there.

The 47deg wet hull Shermans had 62-64mm on the upper front hull and 89mm on the gun manlet.
