Oh god, that is so beautiful... anyway, are those bad boys going to have splash-damage from the burnage, or just act as MG-type weapons (LOS only)? While awaiting the answer, I'd like to be alone with those screenshots... pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Really. Plug your ears, even. :naughty::naughty::naughty:

Solo, you're absolutely right. The flamethrowers in Call of Duty are terrible, you walk slow, they have horrible damage and range and you have to be out in the open to hit anything with it effectively. I wonder if hand held flamers could be used to warm up tanks, causing them damage, just like that RTS game.

I'm wondering if the flamer effect will actually light people on fire so that they'll burn a bit even after you stop shooting.

So far, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the only game I've seen that effectively used flamethrowers in multiplayer.

Oh, I doubt they'll do all this. The flamethrowers in RTCW were often referred to as lagthrowers (though I think they were more framerate killers than lag inducers). BF1942 doesn't seem to get into a lot of particle effects as far as the engine goes. It'll do the shading stuff and you'll get dust clouds or puffs on the uniform, but that seems to be it. I dunno. Maybe you could add code to the human models so that they "smoke" when you cook 'em. :)

I think they will work just like machineguns, only doing damage to targets that the flame directly hits, without any splash damage, but leaving a small fire in the target area, that will do damage to anyone standing on it.

However, in BG I believe they actually do splash damage. Instead of shooting a constant flame while holding the fire button down, they shoot bursts of fire, that fly a certain range and "explode" on hitting the target, so they basically work like mortars, except that they have a fire effect. I might be wrong about the splash damage, though.

Anyway, just speculation, no real info.
