malone1313Even Roman streets were paved, don't assume that all of Europe until the last few years was driving on dirt and stones. I have not been able to put my finger on it, but NONE of the cities and towns in any BF mod look real or lived in. Everything is sterile, plain and looks like a Hollywood backlot. There are no stores or restraunts, inns or hotels, just plain buildings all with beds and a stove. Nothing has a name on the front of the building, there is no trash in the street. Hell there should be dead horses and people, blood stains, dirt mud, clothes etc. Towns (not all of them) should look ransacked, with stuff everywhere. How about a piano in the middle of the street? Seen lots of pictures of those type of scenes. I have never even seen street signs, traffic lights or power lines. How about some fruit or newspaper stands? HOW ABOUT CARS?! Civilian cars? Why does every place look like I'm the first human to ever visit there? I don't know if it's light mapping, lack of everyday item statics, art, posters, maybe actual glass in the windows, who knows, but every town, village and house in BF looks like total shit.
Totally agree. Hate to mention Band of Brothers, because it's already been mentioned so many times, but they did their set pretty well. I still remember the piano in the middle of the street sounding out some broken notes after getting hit with shrapnel. And anyone played Medal of Honor Allied Assault or Call of Duty? Beautiful towns. Absolutely beautiful. Hopefully, with BF2's better engine we can see better towns in FH. (Not that FH towns aren't already loads better than BF towns.)
I didnt say anything about Europe not having paved streets. I was saying many streets seem to have the street running up to the edge of the building. I have seen alot of cobblestone, bricks, Concrete, and asphalt used. The sidewalks I have seen dont seem to be as wide as present day.
The current sidewalks in the game don't have collision meshes, so they look dumb if you're standle ankle-deep in sidewalk...

They just poured the concrete there :p But yeah.. some civillian cars would be sweet, as statics but even more as drivable vehicle.. they should be very resistant to mg fire so they can be used as cover and such things.

agree fully with the city-statics thingy. Maybe the FH modelers would like to construct more urban statics for a change? they must be getting pretty bored in creating all this tracked vehicles... :p
its a performance issue mostly.. we are talking eye candy here. which is great, but when your all lagged up and cant move then its no good, right? alot more could be made/added to maps.... but it just addeds lag. best solution is painting in these details (cobblestone, pavement, sidewalks) etc. etc. doesnt look as real, but doesnt add the lag that to many actual objects can bring. lag is the overriding issue with map making, ands its tough... visual atmosphere vs performance is always the number 1 issue in a map.
We all know that no game to date gives you a living town feeling, but we also all know how much ram FH already uses... so

Aye, any town details should be low key and low poly. We accept that you can't recreate beautiful cities and not lag.
