Just found this small little tidbit of info on Amped News about Battlefield 2: "Technical The new engine will open many options for modders and map creators. The ground textures on the maps will be made of up to 6 different layers of textures and you are no longer limited to one single detail. That means the whole map. This means you can make the maps much more beautiful than those in BF1942. The modes for 16/32/64 is not a must, if you want to create a mode on your map for 8 players or 37 it's possible. If the official editor that's shipping with the game that will support these options is unclear to us. One new feature about the editor is that the same editor can be used for most things, everything from maps to vehicles. The new editor is going to make it easier for modders since it gives ability to test directly in the editor. You can create a vehicle and test it right in the editor, and that way you can get it exactly how you want it without booting the game."

It seems that the DICE guys are really putting a lot of effort into the mod tools. Great news to hear, and will (only if it happens of course :p ) hopefully optimize the porting of FH.

Why would FH stay on the BF42 engine?

FH is already better than BF42, so why not make itself better than BF2 as well? FH with squads etc. would be so, so sweet.

The only real thing I care about is whether BF2 will support dynamic lighting for night maps and weather effects. I also want to have better water effects. I suppose waves would be too much to hope for? The multi layered ground textures sound good, I can see where that would givce the ground a uneven 3d look. Should even be able to model the scattered rocks all over North Africa so it doesnt look like bare sand.

Dynamic lightning seems to be possible, but maybe that is only on active objects like player models, weapons and vehicles. If you look at the videos and screens you can see for example that when a soldier fires a weapon his face gets lit up. Or on the latest vid from EA, with the blackhawk and cobra chasing the riverboat you can clearly see how the cobra gets lit up when the gunner is firing.
