First of all I'd like to say that I have only the Devs to thank for the incredible immersion that comes when you move your joystick in a certain way and you can see the pilot's hand do that on screen. It's just amazing. Second, what are your controls for driving/shooting with the tank? Mine are mapped to pretty much default for shooting "on the run" meaning I act like there's a gyrostabiliser on that gun. I keep the gun level and shoot on the move, unrealistically. If I found a way I would map the turret rotation to the arrow keys. That's in combat. On my way to combat, if you want to be able to drive the way they do in the old films, and not lose speed when turning, map your joystick throttle to the gas and the twist to turning. If you twist VERY slightly, you don't lose any speed and you still turn very smoothly. Slightly pointless post but overall thanks to the Devs and What does everyone else map controls to?

Everything I do is on keypad, with only secondary controls mapped to the 6 buttons to the top left of it (weapons selection).

Turret movement on mouse, same with firing, same with "show map" and all external views.

Joystick for tank... humm I'll have to try this, even if it certainly won't replace my years of experience with the classic WASD and mouse combo. I've binded my "tank sights" view on the central mouse button, very handy.

This about the 10th time I've asked... how are real WWII tank turret traverse/elevation controls?

in real tanks the gunner has the control of the turret by something that looks like a wheel with a handel that u crank for elevation and right or left. the turret of the tank looks like a big gear. I had the pleasaure of being a gunner on one manuver in a modified sherman which was made to look like a soviet tank for training. in modern tanks this is replaced by almost like joystick like controls all powered by electricity which eliminates the need for manually cranking.

Vehicle movement is mapped to WASD but the turret is mapped to my trackball. With practice I can almost compensate like stabilized.

The fun stuff was when I used to play lots more often and could accurately fire on the move.

But many WWII tanks were powerassist.. surely these weren't hand crank wheels?

Some were indeed, such as the King Tiger. Now compare that to the Tiger I. It's certainly a lot slower. Don't you think that would be hand cranked? It is.

Yossarian RO pisses me off with it's arrow key turret moving.

RO must use the keyboard to rotate the turret because the mouse is used for looking around while poking your head outside.

I use WASD + mouse for FH and am perfectly happy with it. I just dont like the fact that people can change their settings to enable them to rotate their turret faster; Ive seen people rotate the tiger turret faster than I can rotate a normal shermans. BTW good idea using the joystick to eliminate speed loss when turning... now i want a nice set of pedals for steering. I am also going to have to bind mouse3 to tank sites :)
