And even when you're in a tank and see infantry coming, you're still not safe. I hate it when I'm at a flag, and my only options are to stay there and get screwed by some anti-tank guy hiding there, or retreat and lose the flag.

Yes, but you ahve to SEE them first.

As far as APCs, in this game, they're useless basically. With all the AT troops available, with all the tanks available, and with all the planes, they're just larger mobile coffins.

In actual combat, you'd have combined arms. The tanks would take out other tanks or hard targets, the infantry would take out other infantry or soft targets, and the APC would be in between a hard and soft target. It couldn't survive a tank attack, but it would survive an infantry attack (assuming the infantry packs no real anti-tank weapons and is basically using just small arms). So, you'd roll up with all of them, tanks and APCs, to provide cover for each other. The APC, once it's in range, unloads troops and provides supporting fire as the troops advance. It becomes a mobile, better armored MG nest.

The trouble with APCs in BF1942 is that the game just isn't at a scale where they're useful. A jeep is faster and a smaller target. It can get troops in closer and quicker. An APC has an MG, but that's not enough to kill a plane. An APC is toast when a tank shows up or any AT trooper. Because you don't have group tactics or tons of other tanks to target, a lone APC driving around is basically just a moving bullseye.

They're not survivable, fast, or small enough to be practical, nor ar they powerful enough to warrant their use as anything but a two man transport. Now, on an infantry map with no AT troops, they're deadly, but that's a totally different scenario.

APCs (and jeeps) can be very powerfull when used right. you're lost in open combat but on a bigger map with some cover they are great as mobile MG nests. eg, i love the APCs in falais, while the infantry and tanks are going in, i stay in the back or try to get at the edge of the map, away from the bases. on long distances, with the enemy concentrating an approaching troops, i mow them down in masses ;)

In zielona gora, the apc can be used with some effect untill it get killed (like everything else in this game, anyway). But I can't see how an APC can be of use in most maps. Jeeps are 10x times better.

I'm gonna open a new topic for APCs so that this thread can get back to Infantry.

Infantry doesn't have much firepower, protection or speed, but it has several other edges:

Low profile Small target, hard to spot, can hide in buildings and bushes and lots of other places, makes no noise.

Mobility Can move over any terrain, through tight places, buildings and forests. It can even swim some distances.

Vision Can scan the whole 360 arc rather quicly, has unimpaired FOV (compare tanks), some classes even have magnifying optics (binocs, scopes).

Availability Except for special kits, infantry classes are always available through respawning.
