stylie;3509939You are right, its not a chatclub, it is though in the off-topic forums. So before this thread gets closed, I just wanted to say its been real and its been fun, but not really fun. Lightning, Ive tried that route before. Ask around and see which mods have gotten PM's from me, after that, ask how many have responded. Im not leaving all-together, but Im gonna chill-out with FH forums for a bit, but just in case, Jumjum, I expect you to carry on the fight! Your threads are FIGHT!!! Fuzzy, Sellaronda 2009??? Im definately going there at some point. Foodmaniac2003? You know what you have to do. Everyone else, if you wanna chat I'll still be ingame but I expect you all to carry my torch of

Noooooooo. Don't leave us Stylie! :'(

Ill keep doing my part ;)

Though I do admit, my last thread was kinda spammy.

Though when I sent a PM to a Super Mod once, I got a response.

Lightning:

...I don't want to close this thread. I'm only asking of you (and by you I mean everyone) to please regard this forum as a place for serious discussion about non-FH related subjects and not as a spam forum...

(L, pardon the following suck-uppage, but its just as genuine as we regular FHers sometimes think is obligatory in these kinds of issues.) Lightning, if you and I have ever really gotten crossways over an issue I don't remember it, and I sure don't want to start now. You're okay by me and I hope I am by you as well. I hope you take this post in the spirit of goodwill, cooperation and FH-friendliness in which it is made.

Now, I think I'm seeing a general trend of increased mod-control of content in these forums, and the policing of Off-Top in particular. Specifically, I don't understand what "a serious discussion about non-FH related subjects" means.

Maybe my calibration of what is spam and what is Off-Top is out of whack. I only know that from what I've seen of it, the "Spam" forum is truly deeply, madly, uh, well inane. You know, pointless, vacuous and insipid, "talk" just for the sake of talk, the "Have a nice day!" made in everyday life without thought or care. In the grand scheme that's not bad, it's just meaningless jabber, a knee-jerk post-and-immediate-response, 24/7/365 thing, with posts averaging about four words and made about 10 seconds after the one immediately preceding it.

Off-Top, on the other hand, is well, "non-FH". I don't recall seeing anywhere in the FAQs, rules or policies a requirement that discussions therein be "serious", regardless of whether defined as "grave", "in earnest" or "of importance". Even so, there have been many, many threads here which are serious under any definiton of the word.

But there have also been many threads which are whimsical, silly, quirky, groundbreaking, etc. It could just as easily be called the "Alt Whatever". There's a pretty good chance that just about every thread in Off-Top has in it something that is pretty dang funny, interesting or informative to at least as many folks who participate in every other forum except Gen Dis.

You know I try to be as flexible as I can but this forum has rules. If I don't try to maintain those rules I will get told off for doing a bad job.

I think a lot of folks are curious: mods are told off by who? (Okay I guess that should be "whom" for my homies in the Fighting Grammar Nazis Clan.) And told off for what? Well, actually I think what we're more curious about is, who cares and who is bitching? (Heh, give us names and my soul comrades in the Grass Ninjas will start slithering. As a token of our appreciation I bet we could hook you up with some Nigerian government officials who would be very grateful for a teensie bit of help transferring about $25 mill [if it hasn't gone up this year].) My point is, are there really complaints?

Besides, there is at least enough credible anecdotal evidence to support the conclusion that, because of strong opinions and deeply held beliefs among many FHers about religious, cultural or political matters, many "serious" Off-Top threads have been and will almost certainly be in the future a breeding ground for disputes which devolve into caustic, cutting and hurtful remarks, which are themselves so corrosive as to cause enmity, ill-will, and just plain hurt feelings. This ill-will may ultimately result in stressed, even broken, FH relationships, even "feuds". Nobody wants that. And I think I can safely say that hurt feelings and bad blood have never resulted from a thread such as this one (at least those threads which are free from "policing" ).

I'm not saying mods shouldn't enforce the rules. All I'm asking is, could there be a sledgehammer and a fly somewhere in this picture? Is it really necessary, or even a good idea, to drive threads like this (and the numerous FHers who enjoy and actively participate in them) out of the FH community?

Day in and in day out, absent new developments, Off-Top is my favorite FH forum, even with, maybe even because of, threads which don't include "serious discussions". I think this might be the case with more than a few good, solid Fhers who are contribuitng, helpful and generous members. I figure that if there is a thread that is too silly or empty-headed, I just don't participate in it, just like with all those threads in Gen Dis, Suggestions, etc., I feel the same way about. I assume if enough people feel the same way, a stupid thread dies a natural death. Why don't we let the "marketplace of ideas" operate and take the burden off the mods to try to decide which Off-Top thread aren't "serious" enough to live? It seems it will work itself out the same, and without resulting in any unnecessarily pissed-off folks.

Thanks. And thanks for your time and effort.

Uhm why is this in Off Topic?

:moved: from OT to GD.

As for the easter eggs. We had several treads on that in the past but a complete list isn't and I guess never will be available since it's not there. Each (ex) dev would have to tell you his/her eastereggs.

Edit: May I remind you that this thread is for easter eggs? If you feel unhappy with the actions some of the staff took (be it a moderator such as Lobo or Lighting, an supermod such as swede or me or an admin such as dreadnought or wiener) you can either

A) contact them via PM if you know who took action. (In this case not possible since the SuperMod didn't post a "moved + reason for moving" post) B) Contact an admin (Dreadnought deals with member complaints/issieus) C) Write an email to forums@filefront (all admins receive your email then). D) Post in the "Forum Feedback" forum on the mainpage.

jumjum;3510939I hope you take this post in the spirit of goodwill, cooperation and FH-friendliness in which it is made.
Of course I do, in fact, I'm glad you posted this, because I do value your opinion on this matter.

jumjum;3510939I think a lot of folks are curious: mods are told off by who? My point is, are there really complaints?
Well, it pretty much all started last week when I enquired why a thread was moved from the FH offtopic forum to General Discussion. It didn't really stick to that topic and instead it turned into a thread about how much 'spam' there was in the FH offtopic forum. Most of the admins and supermods complained that this place was not enforcing the overall gamingforums rules and that the FH moderators were not doing their job getting rid of the 'spam'. So yes, there have been a lot of complaints about this forum actually.

(Of course what's really bothering me is that I'm getting complaints that this forum is over-moderated now. That is very confusing.)

jumjum;3510939Now, I think I'm seeing a general trend of increased mod-control of content in these forums, and the policing of Off-Top in particular. Specifically, I don't understand what "a serious discussion about non-FH related subjects" means.
Well, "serious" might not have been the best choice of words, but I generally mean that threads in this forum could be less "spammy". And I think your definition of spam ("...pointless, vacuous and insipid, "talk" just for the sake of talk, the "Have a nice day!" made in everyday life without thought or care.") was quite a fitting one. Of course, not all moderators might agree with this definition and some will consider all offtopic posts spam.

The rules in the forum guidelines say: "Please do not spam. There is an appropriate forum set aside for spam, which you can use. Any posts deemed to be off-topic are at risk of being deleted by the forum staff. When you make a post, please ensure it is in the relevant section and is clearly titled." This doesn't define "spam" in any way, but it does mention that offtopic posts are at risk of being deleted.
And I think I can safely say that hurt feelings and bad blood have never resulted from a thread such as this one (at least those threads which are free from "policing" ).

A "serious discussion" does not always have to be about a serious topic, in my opinion. You can just as easily have a serious discussion about another videogame. The point really is that in such threads you keep ontopic and do not spam (too much). But yes, there are also threads that many moderator would consider not serious and spammish that are really fun (like the "pwn" thread) and in my opinion it would be silly not to allow such kinds of threads.

No, of course not. I don't personally feel though that I am overmoderating this forum. I try not to delete any posts (but I will in some cases) and whenever the discussion goes too much astray I will come in and say something along the lines of "come on guys, think for a second what you are doing and please don't spam too much" where as other moderators would simply have closed the thread alltogether.
Day in and in day out, absent new developments, Off-Top is my favorite FH forum...

Well, I am glad to hear that. Hopefully we can make it stay that way.

I really never knew what those easter eggs were. What constitutes an easter egg btw... And what are they useful for?
