Some of you might have read what this machinery does :

pz4-47.jpg

It is an auxilary small 2 cylinder petrol engine and generator in a Panzer IV that generates electricity for the turret to rotate. The turret is driven by electrical motors.

Now the reason why i continue on this subject is Tiger and King Tiger turrets are hydraulic driven. But that doesn't mean nessesarely they need the main engine ( or the amount of rev's it is currently doing ) to function or even to rotate faster.

How this can be ?

This is a similar auxilary engine and generator in a Pershing tank.

tm26-38.jpg

However the turret of a Pershing is hydraulic driven. The auxilary engine and electric generator conneted to it generate electricity independant of the main engine running. In a Pershing the generator on the auxilary engine in turn drives an electric motor that drives a hydraulic pump that in turn drives a hydraulic motor !

tm26-37.jpg

The hydraulic motor drives the turret. Very complex you would say, but a hydraulic pump and motor can generate much more power then an electric motor the same size. That is why an electric motor isn't driving the turret like in the Panzer IV. Yet with the right reduction gear the fast spinning electric motor is very suitable to drive the hydraulic pump.

With this system the Pershing had an hydraulic rotating turret without being dependend on it's main engine, it could be off with the turret still being powered, as long as there was petrol for the auxilary engine to run on.

I dont understand the meaning of this post aside from the technical data. Are you suggesting that the turrets move faster? Or that vehicles can be turned off when they stop? Or that there should be a driver and gunner on all vehicles?

Probably hurts your brains right ?

Yes, it has something to do with ( Tiger ) turret rotating speed and FH. Exactly what depends if i or someone else can prove how exactly the turrets of Tigers and King Tigers were driven.

Or are you trying to say that Tiger turret compared to other tanks works quitte ok ?

I think he's saying that with auxilliary generators, tanks could have powered turrets without the drive engine being on.

So you could sit in complete noiseless stealth and still shoot.

i thought he meant that the tiger turrets move too slowly in the game and they should be made to revolve faster.
