i am here for some little tanking discussion of FH42 tanking...
i hope you guys could share your way
for me , i have some special experiences and "way" to tank
A. Survival Tips (for me) 1. don't bail unless you think your enemy won't be there for 2 minutes 2. never bail in battle even on fire when no cover is near you, you bail just increase chance of death 3. Don't think your tank is invincible, even KT could be killed with just 2-3 hits from a tank destroyer 4. Know your foe, you would not like to practice shooting using a T34/76 trying to kill a Tiger far away 5. Don't panick when your foe is close to you, sometimes it might not be a good idea to fire first if you think you could have 1-hit kill it by hitting somewhere else 6. don't shoot your MG against enemy tank, it's just telling him where you are and your MG is often overheat when some infantry carrying zook, faust is near you.
even i myself sometimes cannot do point 4 and 5.
B. Awful experiences 1. you are always without air cover, although all your teammates are plane camping  2. i dunno why enemy infantry can sneak up on your back even you see a lot of teammates around you :uhm: 3. You are always a hero, you are going to charge a tiger with a single Sherman M4A1 or a T34/76  4. i am puzzled by that my Tank is without any repair for 5 minutes even i think over 20 teammates passed by me. 5. always watch out for TKers when you steal an enemy tank, Friendly fire is always accurate and deadly
in fact i only don't man slow tanks(except tigers lol) i man everything that i think can give some damage and i always hate to play as allied since most tankers cannot shoot a Sherman well, it's so frustrating
My Anti-Tank experience: Stukkkkkkaaaa!!!!!!!
not il2? anything with a bomb is better than stuka lol
Check your rear often with C or F11, just to make sure no infantry is sneaing up behind you. Always lie in wait for the kill shot, neevr engage a more powerful tank in the fron if you can flank it and get to it's side or rear. When in a fast moving tank, like t34/76 or BT7, drive right past the enemy tank and shoot them in the back, most of the time they won't be able to shoot u before you get behind them. Use cover to your advantage, make your tank invisible until after you've shot and killed. Make sure your camping spots are going to look on the flank of oncoming enemy tanks, not their fronts.
aka Killed in First Minute

"A tank in the bush is worth two in the field." "He who shoots first, lives longest." "Entering flags without support invites death." "Better to spawn for 10 seconds, then surrender the KT for 10 minutes." "The infantry is to the Vickers tank, what the Vickers tank is to every other tank on the map." Ok, that's all i got.
My tactic is quite simple... Let those who are better then stylie (The number is quite small ;) ) at tanking, be the ones to do the tanking! Im horrible, I stay away. I do like using arty with a willing spotter. Usually I teamswitch to either the team with the bigger challenge or just the team with lesser numbers, often times that would be allies. I cant for the life of me damage axis tanks, I waste our armor, so I let the better experienced ones do it. I like to support armor though.
Shoot between the tracks and the belly armor of a Tiger and you'll get a 2 hit kill to the front with a Sherman. ;)

What can a tank do agaisnt planes?
Not much, especially agaisnt decent pilots. However, you can help yourself by hiding in trees (those will sometimes stop the bombs or kill a low flying plane). Agaisnt low flying planes with rockets or even bomb, I recommand engaging them as if they were tanks, and try to shoot their engine/cockpit (wings are invincible). If you miss, you'll have your front armor get the blunt of the impact (it can resist a rocket or two sometimes), if you hit, which is not that difficult, then you will have saved yourself and helped the team.
I recommand shooting all enemy planes that fly by with your main gun if you are not hidden in ambush or already fighting another tank ;)
" 2. i dunno why enemy infantry can sneak up on your back even you see a lot of teammates around you :uhm:"
Don't count too much on your infantry support. Its useful, but few people can defend successfully a tank, because they don't know what to do. In fact, most of the time, the accompanying infantry will look the same way than you, which is pointless. Use external cameras often, its the best way you can find enemy inf sneaking.
Also, use your main gun agaisnt infantry! The shells explode, so aim for walls adjacent to enemy inf or at the ground. Be careful not to go near house corners and other places were infantry might be hiding, if nobody checks these out, you can fire a shell on the ground there, or near hiding spots. Spamming bushes with MG and shells randomly is also good. You have plenty of shells and bullets, so use them.
" 3. You are always a hero, you are going to charge a tiger with a single Sherman M4A1 or a T34/76 "
A single sherman or T34 can kill, or damage, a single Tiger, thats not a problem. First, its better to be patient (key word when it comes to tanking) and wait for it to pass in ambush. If you can get the first shot (on its tracks, you won't damage it otherwise), you'll have a headstart. You can also try to flank him, if possible. If you attack him from the sides, shoot at the tracks and continue moving so that you can keep shooting at the same place, because he will move too.
"4. i am puzzled by that my Tank is without any repair for 5 minutes even i think over 20 teammates passed by me."
Always carry a wrench! Drive away from the action and hide near some far away house, and repair it there.
" 5. always watch out for TKers when you steal an enemy tank, Friendly fire is always accurate and deadly ""
Indeed. Its a good idea to spam : "THE KINGTIGER IS ALLIED!" 3 or 4 times, especially if you want to drive it towards an allied flag to repair it (also, don't point that gun towards allied tanks, it tends to freak them out ;) ).
"in fact i only don't man slow tanks(except tigers lol) i man everything that i think can give some damage and i always hate to play as allied since most tankers cannot shoot a Sherman well, it's so frustrating"
How to aim with tanks that don't have laser guns :
First its important to note that the aiming sights are not inside the tank gun, which is why the gun can seem awfully unnacurate at short or long range. In some tanks, the sights are very far from the gun, so they actually aim nearly up to a meter away from where they should, so you have to adjust. I recommand practicing with tanks you have trouble with by shooting in house windows, and small targets (such as a chemney) from different ranges.
Second, you need to know the velocity of the gun shell (less important), and its ballistic value (more important). With experience, you'll be able to estimate quite accurately the range of your target, and adjust the range accordingly without really thinking about it. When shooting moving targets, its of course important to shoot ahead of the target, since the shells don't move that fast, and can take a full second before reaching their targets at long range. I suggest practicing a lot with allied tanks. They are challenging, but much more rewarding. You'll also become better a lot faster by driving shermans, cromwells and T34, because you'll learn to be more careful and shoot better.
You also need to learn the weak spots of all tanks, the places you can hurt and those that are invincible. Front armor of all tanks is generally more armored, but some tanks, like the Panzer IV, have weak turret armor. Its possible to kill a PzIVH in head to head battle when you know you have to hit its turret 2 times. Heavier tanks sometimes have weak tracks (this is the case with the Tiger and Elefant), and you need only shoot there 2-3 times to kill it. Some, like the PzIII and IS2 (especially the IS2) have a weak cupola, which you can shoot to kill it. I could go on and name some weaker spots for all tanks. By knowing those, and by being good enough to shoot at these, you'll be able to accomplish otherwise impossible feats .
When you'll be able to kill a dozen tanks and some infantry with a mere sherman without dying, you'll be able to dominate a round 60-50-0 with a panther. ;)
Good stuff, Komrad.

For now I'm too lazy to think of my own tips, so I'll just...
1. Don't bail unless you're in a Sherman, T-34/76, Pz 4H, or other tank that can be easily destroyed if captured. 2. Never bail without trying your outmost to kill the other tank, and after bailing, stay close and try to hop in the tank to shoot back (if not destroyed already) 6. When engaging other tanks, never let anyone except people you know enter the mgs in your tank. They will most likely start shooting at infantry some 100m away, thus making a) you an obvious target for enemy tanks in that square mile, b) you wondering if the guy has been dropped too many times as an infant.
Last one is especially important in maps like Nordwind; a single "#&%(%¤ spraying in the top of the Jumbo can make it Swiss cheese in a second, thus allied losing one of their few tanks.
That reminds me, there are often people who always know that it's best to advance and engage (regardless of map) german tanks front to front, rather than trying to flank or ambush them before advancing. The earlier kind of heroism only works if you manage to get past the axis lines and surprise them from behind. [/rant]
