Just thought i would share some of my uni work for opinion with the gaming forums community. Advice into how i can make it better and any kind of effects that can be used is greatly appreciated! Im currently in my third year of UNI but this is the first semester that we have done any kind of 3d work. The enviroment was created entirely in maya and none of the objects have textures yet, just materials!

attachment.php?attachmentid=49576&stc=1&d=1146794390 This is the chair i just moddeled and it is sitting infront of a tv. at this point i hadnt developed the glow from the tv

attachment.php?attachmentid=49577&stc=1&d=1146794390 This is a side profile of the chair but now with an area light towards the chair and a glow on the screen material

attachment.php?attachmentid=49578&stc=1&d=1146794390 This shot was created to test the reflection that would happen off my tv screen

attachment.php?attachmentid=49579&stc=1&d=1146794390 This is a shot of the fluro light a moddeled and then decided to go into extra detail and model within the tube which you can see in the next image

attachment.php?attachmentid=49580&stc=1&d=1146794390 I think its a nice little effect when you add the minor details like that. Even though when i create the movie it wont be seen, its still there.

attachment.php?attachmentid=49582&stc=1&d=1146794390 This is the lighting state of the pole underneath the sphere, the whole enviroment is meant to be very fantasy like but i havnt started moddeling all that yet

attachment.php?attachmentid=49583&stc=1&d=1146794390 Here is a shot of it all toghether.

By no means have finished it, just thought i would get some feedback for what i have done.

Cheers

I agree with Nemmerle, use softer shadows. They are way to hard and jaggy now. And a couple of questions more...

Is it meant to be this dark? Are you going to add glow to the orange thingie? Do you have a poly-limit set for the scene? What kind of assignement is it? When do does it have to be finished? What are you trying to accomplish with this scene, has it a purpose?

Maybe its my fault that i've seen some beautiful maya work and this looks pretty beginner, maybe not.

I think it overall needs some smoother edges, some brightening up, and less clutter. Just fine-tune it, work on rendering bigger and sizing down, and that TV should be level.

Yeah it looks pretty begginer because it is. :D This is our first 3d subject and assignment so we are all learning about the tools and trades of maya but have not yet mastered or even know what they all do. I might warm the light up with globes hanging from the ceiling. I know what they mean when they say that students make there scenes dark because they are scared that it will look crappy when it is lit. I might change the fluro into a few warm burning light globes. Thats might look cool. The tv is on a slant because its not on a table, its on a pile of books, tried to add abit of random geometry placment as apposed to having it all neat. What shadow system and settings do you reccomend for soft shadows?

The overl idea behind creating this was that attics contains lots of information about the occupiers of it. When you go into an attic and search through all this memoriabla its all this past information and if that were me i would be imagining all the scenenarios in which all these objects were part of in the past, So i decided to make the attic abit of a fantasy world because its the first thing i think of when i hear the word, attic. memories and using you imagination to place all the items into a world!

Oh the assignment is to create an attic in maya as well :D cheers for all the feedback, really appreciate it, i am very new, 6 to 7 weeks, new to this so the crticism only helps me to learn more!
