The Gimp/Gimpshop is a free editing program that has very similar capabilities to Adobe Photoshop.

Take a look at the 'official' tutorials

http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

Or just use Google for 'Gimp Tutorials'.

Here is one of the best i once found and used:

Click Me!

It's a really good one, teaches you all about the brushes, renders, etc. I suggest you give it a try.

Adobe Photoshop?

But seeing as that is around £350/400 pounds. You might not want it

Well, I'm just new at graphics design as well, so i might not be the one that should be asked. I know that Adobe Photoshop CS/ 7.0, is recommended, but thats expensive as hell, hence i do not have it.

Edit: Well, I unintentionally made the same point as Firethrone.
