So, I started to experiment with GIMP for sigs and avatars. Just want to get some opinions from the public and maybe advice from the experts :)
Well!? The Hierarchy Sig was also made by me
Uh next time - use the first imageshack forum link. the
Second please next time showcases :)
As to the sig itself. It's missing a few things like a border and a lightsource. Could use a bit more depth and flow as well.
Otherwise, good early attempts :) I'm sure you'll get better.
Damn, I wish there was a more simplified gimp tut. and do you mean, smooth or images that are related somehow when you said 'more depth and flow' ??
look here, might help you.
Depth is basically the depth of the image, how much some things fit and appear in the forground and background. Generally things further up are either lighter or sharper and the further back you move, the darker and more blurred it is. Of course that's not always the case, but the basis.
If you look at yours. The doom 3 sign is very big and sharp, it literary stick out. But at the same time, the low opacity monster on the left obscures it (which is clearly deeper due to blurryness of it) while at the same time, the doom sign obscures the sharp monster. Which is clearly more infront than the one on the left.
The border is just a border around the sig, which can be a nything from a one pixel stroke black line around the whole thing.
Lightsource is a plae from where the light in the sig originates, in this case, going by the monster on the right it should be in the upper mid, left. since the monster is illuminated from the upper mid/left.
Flow is how the eye travels along the sig.
just for to show it more directly. You should see at least 3 depth levels on this image. (It's not that great but meh. level one - the headphones. Then you get a little bit lower and get the hair and face as a level too. And the face is strictly differentiated from the background which at first glance appears to be deeper.
The lightsource (the large ball of white light) goes from the lower middle illuminateing both the flow lines heading upwards to the right as well as the face from under.
hope this helps.
I managed to scrape the border command through the long lists.
But I don't quite get the Tutorials you gave me in the link... It all says 'in the gimp'. Do I need to download the tutorials like I did for the brushes!? Are they in video format and such?
well you wanted gimp tutorials... Those tutorials are just images that tell you what to do...
