I really like playing around with this program called Terragen t_new1_887.jpg Quite neat huh Rendering takes a bit of time though. Found the basic tutorial and download link here.

THe program often is adviced to make skyboxes with for games, never tried itmyself but it looks like it could be fun. :D

duh, i'm not stupid :uhm: winkx.gif. Its just that for example on the modding sites for bf1942 you are flooded with lines to use teragen to make stuff like custom skyboxes.

Lots of programs let you generate images based on variables. Those are cool for backgrounds, but I prefer to create from scratch. It may not look as pretty, but I have full control. ;)

Well, okay...i attached one of mine, but there are a couple of terrain rendering programs out there. Artmatic (for Macs only but a really awesome program), WorldMatic, even programs like bryce, mojoworld, and Vue D' Esprit can create great landscape based renders.
