I dunno if im here for advice or to vent. But i bought GTA: San Andreas on the day it was released and played it hard on my old PS2 for a week and then my PS2 Stopped working altogether (It would not read any discs). Now i was seriously gutted, But my PS2 was in the best condition and would not read blue discs anyways. So for 3 or so weeks without being able to play, My friend said i could borrow his to complete the game. He bring his PS2 to my house and we play GTA and Pro Evo for a while without problem. Then he leaves my house i turn off the PS2. I come back a lil while later to start playin it again and the PS2 starts makin all these loud noises like a helicopter or something and the game starts pausing in the middle and saying disc read error constantly until it stops. I thought damn! Phoned my friend explained what was happening. He suggested tryin a different disc, So i stuck Pro evo in and it would not load up and the ps2 told me to insert a playstation format disc. And just totally would not load up and still makes the loud noises!! What the hell is going on? Ive turned the PS2 off anyways now and im gonna leave it until my friend comes tomorrow so he can witness it for himself.

My friend, that is EXACTLY what happened to me. My PS2 worked for a while and then it stated clicking when i tried playing madden 2005. Unfortuneately, it will cost around $100 to get it repaired. Fortunately, the new SLIM PS2 is out and you can buy it for $150. Lucky you, because i bought a new fat PS2 a week before the slim one came out. DAMMIT!

Yes hopefully my friends PS2 is ok. When mines broke i did plan on gettin the new slim PS2, Unfortunatly they sold out in the UK and sony has not been able to make them quick enough so i have not been able to buy a PS2 for the passed few weeks. Hopefully i will get one next week. Also my friend told me there was a glitch in the slim PS2's sold here? I dunno if this is true or not.

Well Lads we opened the PS2 up today to see what the loud noises the disc drive was making, could not quite figure it out. However noticed the lazer was set far back on the rotatin bar which slides it along, and it seeemed to be stuck so i adjusted it myself and moved it in towards the disc spinner. The game then worked! So i played it for a while without problem, after about 30 minutes the clicking noise came back and the game once again stalled.

I've heard about the PS2 going down like that when a game is left on for extended periods of time. Did you leave GTA SA on overnight? Any game could cause this, but because of the longer loading time and amount of information GTA SA stores in the PS2's RAM, it makes for a much quicker unwelcome reaction.

Unfortunately, since you opened your PS2, you've voided the warranty:uhoh: Your best bet now is to get a slim one, but just make sure you dont drop any large objects on it, I've seen them break already -_-;

I really don't like the PS2 for this reason. My friends wigged out like that and all hell broke loose. Thats why I stick to the Xbox...But some games for PS2 made me buy it in the first place. It's not all bad.

I think the bottom line here, is that if you take CARE of your PS2 and dont leave it running all night, problems like these shouldn't occur....OH CRAP I LEFT MY PS2 ON ALL NIGHT

(Runs to shut it off) Haha, lates.

Ok, heres what you need to do (NOTE: Be VERY Careful)- 1: Disconnect the PS2 and put it on a counter or something were you have room. 2: Turn the Playstation over so the bottom is on top. 3: Take out all the spares on the bottom (they're meant to come out, so they're easy to remove). 4: Unscrew and remove the screws they conceal. 5: Turn the PS2 back over and remove the top cover VERY CAREFULLY, there are wires holding it on that are very fragile. 6: Now you should see something that has a sticker on it that says "Laser Radiation: DO NOT stare into beam", disregard this warning unless you are doing this while your PS2 is on, in which case you're an idiot. Take a very small screwdriver and remove the screws that hold that thing on. 7: Remove the disc drive cover (the thing you ust unscrewed). Now this is the difficult part, do this very carefully, DO NOT use force. It shouldn't come off if you pull it strait up, it's latched on. Twist it either way while lifting up, it should come off eventually, after moving it around a bit. 8: Now you should see the game you had in it (if you didn't remove it before, which isn't necessary by the way). Now get at least two cotton swabs. Use one on the laser reader in a circular motion. Use the other cotton swab(s) on the two bars that the laser reader slides on. When I 1st did this I got something black that looked like GREASE off those bars, which is why I advise using more than one cotton swab on them. (NOTE: You can move the laser reader back and forth on those bars to clean where the reader was before) 9: Put all of the covers and screws back on and hook your PS2 back up, you're ready to play. Hope this helps.

Yer i did actually fix it lads. I opened his up once again and did something similar to what the guy above said, I just took the laser off gave the white bit a clean that sit on the rotary thing, also took out the metal bars and cleaned them and put some petroleum jelly and hair grease on em lol stuck em back, cleaned the lil holes on the laser which slide across the bars, stuck it back in and my friends PS2 worked fine. Wonderful! Oh and bought myself the new slim PS2 last week!
