So we should probably have a few words about this one. Early access game, with some striking parallels to UT2004 and Battlefront 2 (the 13-year-old one which isn't total shit). Fitting, since it started out as a UT2004 mod anyway.

Two game modes, Territories and Incursion. Territories is pretty much what you'd expect, fight across the map and camp out on some control points until they flip. Comes in ground and space flavours, ground giving access to LAVs, mechs, tanks and/or gunships depending on the map once you do well enough as infantry to be offered one.

Incursion strings two or three rounds of Territories into a campaign, one side on attack and the other defending (fixed, based on the map). Normally starts out with a space battle and ends on a ground assault. Fighters and bombers are freely available, corvettes are offered to scoring players once progress is being made, dropships are added when it's time to breach and sometimes the attacker's carrier will join the fight as well (as long as someone pilots it).

Allegedly a "commander mode" in it, but it boils down to a simplified version of UT2004's orders menu. Players can nominate themselves as commander at the start of a match, then vote amongst themselves, or leave it up to the AI. If AI are switched on, players get one AI squadmate, and the "commander" gets eight to boss around but it's basic and clunky. 'attack/protect my target', 'follow me', 'do wtf you want' sort of thing.

Naturally, the command AI is hilariously bad, and bots are sometimes terrible at staying on target in space. Don't expect a dropship breach to get done and forget about effective attacks on cap ships unless humans do it.

Been playing a few rounds on the latest build, and there's a lot here to be enthusiastic about.

Gunplay is on point, dogfights are fairly challenging and wicked fun, game looks great even with dated graphics. Performance sits in the 45-55 region with 30+ bots running around, which is solid. There's a lot of details the game doesn't need, but has anyway. Watching space battles from the windows on board a larger ship? Breaking into enemy spawn rooms and using their vehicle terminals to steal a fighter? Impromptu battlefield engineering? Serious-but-not-excessive loadout customisation? Check, check, check and check.

It's still early days, and AFF has a ways to go, but I've enjoyed it enough to award a tentative 7.5 kittens.

I don't know how, and I don't know why, but this is totally Sheep's fault.

Since Youtube sucks and we can't embed Streamable, here's a few snippets of the Ixion incursion.

I have it but haven't played in a while.

Every time I've played it's always been one of those games that had so much potential but just wasn't there yet.

I'll have to try it again and see what improved.
