Games industry luminaries gathered for this year's BAFTA Games Awards at London's Portman Hotel. Refusing to lie down and die, Rockstar North's phenomenal success story Grand Theft Auto: Vice City proved king of the ceremony, the title walking away with no less than five BAFTAs. Scooping top honors in PS2, PC, Design, Action and Sound awards, Vice City also nabbed the Sunday Times Readers' Award, the only award presented at the ceremony that was voted for by the public. Sony's PS2 tech gadget Eye Toy: Play and GBA strategy title Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising won two awards each, the former taking home BATFAs in the Children's and Technical Achievement categories and the latter BAFTAs in the GBA and Strategy categories. The BAFTA award for GameCube category went to Retro Studios' much loved sci-fi epic Metroid Prime. 'Cube and Nintendo also came up trumps in the Adventure category, with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker scooping a BAFTA here. Activision proved to be another big winner on the night, with role-playing game Star Wars: KOTOR winning the Xbox category, Tony Hawk on N-Gage taking a BAFTA for the Mobile category and PC first-person shooter Call of Duty winning the prestigious Game on Any Platform - The Year's Best Game BAFTA award. Other BAFTA winners were class multiplayer action spectacular Battlefield 1942, not surprisingly scooping the award in the Multiplayer category, FIFA 2004 which took Sports and Bizarre Creations' Project Gotham Racing 2 which scored a BAFTA in the Racing category. The award for Animation/Intro went to Soul Calibur II, while the Music category was won by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Lastly, but by no means least, BAFTA this year honored Sony Europe President Chris Deering, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the games industry.
