For those of you who haven't heard about this yet please pay attention. For starters, read this: http://topic.news.filefront.com/7968;/More_On_Doom_3__Creative/ Summary: Creative basically strong armed id to include EAX support in Doom 3 by threatening to sue over a software patent regarding a shadowing algorithm used by John Carmack in Doom 3. What does this mean? We should stop supporting Creative if this is the kind of business practice they use. Forcing developers to implement features by threatening litigation over questionable patents is not a fair act. What can we do? First off I'm no longer going to be purchasing Creative or 3D labs products. Secondly I planning to send off an email to the following Creative PR employee complaining about what they've done. Who to email: Lara_Vacante@creativelabs.com (public relations) Spread this to other gaming forums, let's make sure Lara's email inbox is full tomorrow when she gets to work. It's too bad that Carmack didn't stand up to Creative because now they will continue trying to bully developers. Thanks.
HAHAHAH, SUCKS FOR YOU..
i'll continue with creative, they rock! and so what, its a business, and thats a good business opportunity.. MS does much worse but i bet you still use windows.. uh huh..
Creative doesn't "rock". There are plenty of other audio/soundcard vendors with equal if not better products. By allowing Creative to get away with this kind of action you're setting a precedent for other hardware vendors to do the same thing. To me this is as lame as Fileplanet getting exclusive rights to demos/videos while filefront can't legally distribute them. You might not care now but you will in 5 years when major gaming titles will be heavily optimized for one video card vendor due to unfair practices. "MS does much worse but i bet you still use windows.. uh huh.." yeah... OS: linux-2.6.7-gentoo-r7
If doom3 infringed on a copyright, what do you think would have been better, sueing id or making this deal?
It business, and like Redm said, if there's someone to boycott its microsoft, but they are a well run monopoply and without them we couldn't play 90% of all popular video games. Its better they choose Creative anyway, they have a great product.
Your right this is bs you should post this on the doom 3 forums. Patenting gaming software algorithms is just crappy business. It doesnt matter if they got sued or make that deal Creative will still be expiolting exploit id. Only reason why I stick with creative is because of the cpu's in the card itself.
REDM, I guess that what DAN means has to do far more than with just DOOM3. Thanks to him we are now witnessing some muscle using on part of companies to, dare I say it... monopolize. Yes, I use Windows, but then that's one Operative System I learned to use because, sadly, I didn't have a choice, I was brought up on it. But now Creative is on the first steps to try to do something that, if they keep on doing it, will take away our right to choose what soundcard we wish to use. If I don't like CLabs souncards I can still choose something else. If I can't afford a CLabs Soundcard, I can still buy something else, because I know that, regardless, all my games will work well with ANY soundcard. But if they take away my right to choose, be it because of performance or because of money, then I am left with only one option and that's THEIR product. I remember that EA games tried to do a deal with Nvidia to try and make something about giving the people that had GeForce a little something extra on the games, thus making every person that had ANY other type of videocard "a bit" left out. Sincerely, do you think this is a way to treat a gamer? One great thing of our Hobbie is that we PICK the parts we want to use on our computer and we LOVE it! Even BRAG about it. But if that RIGHT that we have to choose becomes jeopardize I think that, if we have the time and the opportunity, we have to do something to stop it. At least that's my opinion.
I coudlnt agree more like I said this is bs
its much more simple.. if true at all.. creative designed whatever.. id used it without creative's concent.. and now a deal has been struct between the two companies.. nothing wrong with that..
If we didnt have the ability to copyright inventions.. that's what would really suck..
