It surprised precisely no one when Activision last month revealed plans for yet another game in the publisher's popular Call of Duty franchise, though until now details have been kept just beyond our line of sight. Now new scans lifted from the latest issue of the UK's Official Xbox Magazine have confirmed earlier rumors that the series' fifth installment, apparently dubbed Call of Duty: World at War, will be handled by developer Treyarch, and that the game's previously teased "new military theater" will again drop players behind enemy lines in a battle for the Pacific during World War II.

According to the article, Treyarch aims to "explore the darkest corners of WWII," giving the military shooter more of a survival horror flavor by "tackling darker themes" and pitting players against a "new, seemingly alien fighting force." Activision has yet to officially announce Call of Duty: World at War, though it seems clear that we'll be trading in our guided anti-tank missiles for submachine guns sooner than we'd like.

What do you guys think? A good idea to go back to WWII, even though the last one was such a success?

I think (hope) by Alien, they mean the Japanese style of war Though I think its a step forward to have a WW2 game in the Pacific, too many in Europe

Well it's not a new developer, they switch every time a new game comes out. Treyarch made CoD, Cod3 and now they get COD5, it's fun to point out that Activision always made the better ones, namely COD2, and COD4.

As for the Aliens... I hope that's just a metaphor for something with oodles of fun behind it.

The problem is that Activision owns the name rights of Call of Duty itself, pretty much enabling them to publish anything they want under that label.

Infinity Ward owns the intellectual rights to the series and ideas behind it. Notice how the only quality games are:

Call of Duty Call of Duty 2 Call of Duty 4

Call of Duty United Offensive was pretty good too, but it was developed by Gray matter, who were later bought out by Treyarch.

Treyarch made CoD, Cod3 and now they get COD5, it's fun to point out that Activision always made the better ones, namely COD2, and COD4.

Eh? What?

Treyarch never, ever made the original Call of Duty. Don't you disgrace one of the most pinnacle FPS ever. Activision has never developed a Call of Duty game either. They simply publish and distribute them.

Why are people taking the "alien" thing too literally? Do you actually think that they will shove in some UFO's and aliens to battle? As far as I know there wasn't any aliens fighting during WW2. By "seemingly alien" they are referring to the Japanese style of warfare. Ok now that's out of the way... I like the move to the pacific theater of war and at least they are doing something a little different, but it's still developed by Treyarch. As has been proven before, Infinity Ward seems to be doing the better job with the series. But hey, I'll wait and see whether Treyarch do a decent job.
