I installed Civ 4. It didn't work at first because of the ATI problem, but I used the fix solution posted on the Civ 4 official website and eventually got it to work fine. I noticed later in the game once I'd explored and traded world maps that whenever I viewed a piece of shaded territory (i.e. territory I've explored but have no active units or cities in the area) the game crashes. I uninstalled Civ 4, reinstalled it and used the 1.9 patch rather than the Civ 4 website fix to get the game working again. However, the problem with the shaded territory remained. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there an alternative fix?

Give it a bit of time. I had a problem similar, after uncovering a large portion of the map it would lock up, but would eventually come back. Tell me if you have any success with that.

You might try the fix suggested below from this thread:

The KangarooTo fix this low performance bug I have changed the following settings:

Enter your C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\ folder and open "_Civ4Config" (.ini file) with notepad

(edit: mine was called CivilizationIV.ini and was located in: C:\Documents and Settings\UserNameHere\My Documents\My Games\Civilization 4)

Changing the following settings to the ones below solved my problem, hope it works for others also.

AllowScreenShots = 0 SyncInput = 1 D3D9Query = 1 LoggingEnabled = 1

Just so you know, for me, the .ini file was in the location I showed in the green edit above.

It seems to have cured the CTD/game freezing issues I was having in the latter part of games. After applying the changes, I played a save game for a couple of hours with no problem. Prior to that, I could only play that same save for maybe 5 turns before it crashed or froze up.
