I tried a Core Designs TR game pre Legend, Angel of Darkness, and the movement gunplay and graphics weren't so good, not to mention it had lots of performance issues. Since I'm not interested in the older tech games, I passed on the original ones that everyone raves about.

The first TR I really enjoyed was Legend, but Anniversary remains my fave so far. IMO Underworld was a disappointing let down compared to Anniversary. The gameplay was nowhere as challenging in puzzles or combat, and the relic scavenging was just so pathetically easy and obvious.

I've seen trailers of the upcoming Tomb Raider, and though they went top notch with cutscenes, I'm worried the gameplay will be yet another one of those many cases where cinematics and gimmicky physics reign over solid puzzles, combat and adventure. Ever since players whined about the difficulty of Anniversary, they've made nothing but tame games.

Angel of Darkness was a miserable failure and spelled the end of Core. The year it came out (2003), Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb was a MUCH better game. I highly recommend it if you like Action Adventure games.

I agree with you, Angel of Darkness is a complete fiasco, the worst of the entire series... I loved all core design releases except AoD, in fact i hated this one. Cristal Dynamics releases are nice games but they are not Tomb Raider games for the ones who play it since the begin... The grafics are nice but Lara Croft is not anymore what she used to be... Cristal Dynamics Lara cant jump, cant run, the controls are horrible... Core design Lara is so easy to control, Cristal Dynamics Lara seems drunk, i always had some dificulty to control her properly.

Wow, don't recall anyone preferring the older ones for that reason. I've never had any trouble controlling Lara in the latter games. She seems plenty acrobatic enough movement wise too.

Are you sure it isn't the spec you play on? The older games don't require nearly as high end a PC. Any lag at all in a game like that can make the movement very difficult.

Anniversary? Hard? Pff. Mildly difficult, at most.

I'm only referring to the parts like the timed apparatus jumps in the Pyramid level. If you'd seen the multitude of complaints about it on the official forum you'd know what I'm talking about.

They're not hard for some, personally I enjoyed them, but as TR games go they were above average in difficulty, which put many people off. Older games had more traditional platforming vs timed gizmos.

For those, like me, who miss old Core design´s Lara Croft and dont like the Crystal Dynamics release, i´m gonna start to post here some TRLE custom levels. For those who dont know what is TRLE, this was a level editor for Tomb Raider that have been realesed by Core Design in 2001, based on TR4 - Last Revelation game engine and have been completelly updated and rebuilded by some programmers this last years. Actually, we barely recognise the old TR4, grafics and movements have been completely updated and you can expect high quality level sets in this thread, better than the Cristal Dynamics Tomb Raider releases.

For start, a classic : TRLE - Himalayan Mysteries

The next TRLE levelset is from the same author from the previous, and this is a quality warranty. In fact, this autor, Titak is one of the best in TRLE world and my fav one.

TRLE - Mists of Avalon - First Clues

2500b.jpg2500a.jpg

file size: 326.16 MB file type: TR4

Story ** Avalon became a more and more powerful and spiritual place over the course of many years. Its priests and priestesses lived according to the laws of nature and by the movements of the sun and moon.

Morgain, also known as Morgan le Fey, was Lady of the Lake (high priestess of Avalon) during King Arthurs reign. She was Arthurs half-sister. She made for him the sheath of his legendary sword Excalibur and she is the mother of his son Gwydion.

Sometime during King Arthurs reign, Avalon started to become isolated in time and space. Lost to the rest of the world. Only the priestesses and priests of Avalon could reach it with a small boat, willing the mists surrounding Avalon to yield.

It is believed that a map to the location of Avalon is hidden in King Arthurs tomb. But where is King Arthurs tomb? According to some versions of the legend his body was buried on Avalon itself...

** Atlantis was destroyed by the wrath of the Atlantean god Deios. The survivors fled overseas, in different directions, but the Stone of Omphalis was saved from the destruction and was brought overseas to the Tor where it was placed in an underground labyrinth to harness its immense powers.

It is believed that the Stone of Omphalis has indeed great spiritual powers. The Atlanteans were able to harness and even channel this power through singing rituals, thus enabling them to build massive structures that could not be built with any of the conventional tools. This power could explain how Avalon, with the Tor at its centre, became lost in time and space.

** So the legends of Atlantis and Avalon seem to be connected...
