Project lead Frederik "Fresch" Schreiber has received a non-commercial license to proceed with Duke Nukem: Next-Gen, his Unreal Engine 3-powered Duke Nukem 3D remake. Fresch secured the license in just under three weeks after his first announcement -- a credit to rights holder Gearbox's openness to share the franchise with the community -- and has aleady assembled a team of nine other contributors (though he is still "hiring" for a number of positions).
Fresch, who abandoned similar "next-gen" remakes of Daikatana (too unpopular) and SIN (shut down by MumboJumbo), has plans to release a public multiplayer demo of Duke Nukem: Next-Gen "sooner than you think." Of course, the full version will be released "when it's done" -- and he notes that "Duke Nukem: Next-Gen" is, wisely, just a codename.
A wise decision by Gearbox. They'll be able to keep the brutal, hungry Duke fans at bay while concentrating on Forever. For free.
Hey, this looks like a good idea to me. I liked Duke Nukem 3D and I certainly like seeing good old games remade with a better engine. Not that I care much for graphics, but going from 2D sprites to full 3D models certainly makes this game worthy of my attention. Video definitely looks promising. And they kept the original Jon St. John's voice. Excellent.
Gearbox Software has officially announced that they will be making a remake of Duke Nukem 3D. This remake is under the working title, Duke Nukem Next-Gen. This does not mean that they are canceling Duke Nukem Forever or Duke Nukem Trilogy, this is merely a third game in development. Here is the official announcement for the game:
I wonder how many years it will take to get this one....
I like Gearbox though. They did a fantastic job with Borderlands (one of my fav games), but i just have a feeling DNF is going to be a let down at this point. Oh, and for anybody who owns Borderlands on Steam, the latest update includes a code for the DNF first access club, just look under your CD-Keys.
is this the new duke nukem that they are saying to be released?
Uh, new Duke Nukem? :wiener: It's a remake of the old Duke Nukem 3D. It has nothing to do with Duke Nukem Forever, if that's what you meant.
