A few of you may be familiar with the Fortnite title, which is Epic's co-operative zombie survival tower defence game. Even more of you may be aware of its free to play twin, Fortnite: Battle Royale. Battle Royale is Epic's response to the popularity of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - and depending on who you ask, an all around more popular game.

In Fortnite: Battle Royale, you and up to 99 other individuals are dropped down on a colorful island filled to the brim with delicious weapons, and asked to survive and achieve Victory Royale.

So, what sets it apart from its primary competitor? For one, there is no first person perspective in Battle Royale, and Epic has stated they have no intentions of adding one. Personally, I feel it makes for higher paced combat, but your mileage may vary. It also features building, which works well since the game also features destructible environments.

And the developers actually know how the fucking engine works

I have it downloaded but haven't actually tried it yet.

I played Fortnite in the closed beta and it was pretty good so I've always wanted to check it out.

This game is now head-to-head with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, apart from Dota 2, WoW and League of Legends.

This game is the reason for the fate of Paragon and coming soon... Unreal Tournament 4. madx.gif

I suspect Paragon was destined to fail from the start. There was barely any marketing for it, let alone talk of it. I think the only reason I knew about it was through my Twitch Prime subscription. It's the same case for Unreal Tournament 4. I haven't even played it yet, let alone seen much in the way of marketing for it. Fortnite, however? Adverts all over the place. Routinely tops the Most Viewed list on Twitch.

I've always been under the impression that Unreal Tournament was just something they were developing while improving the engine and that's what they tested it with.

Similar with the original vision for Fortnite. Fortnite Battle Royale took all of them by surprise I think.

Apparently the only reason they did Battle Royale was as an internal thing. They all enjoyed PUBG, and wanted to see if they could pull it off. Turned out to be so damn good that they decided to release it to the public, and it just started an avalanche.

But yeah, I think they just produced Fortnite and Unreal Tournament 4 as "conceptual games" to show off the engine. Now they're pretty damn good games.

Technically. They're different modes. Fortnite refers to the game itself - that is, both. Though it's more often than not used to refer to Battle Royale these days. The other mode is Save the World, which is the tower defence/survival/co-op version. Battle Royale is free, while you have to purchase Save the World(should be free later this year, according to Epic).

Ahh so that'd be why I only know it for Battle Royale. smilie.gif
