Well maybe installing games is something The Geek Squad can actually excel at. God knows I'd never trust them with actual complex computer problems.

I heaved a sigh the other day when I found out Magnolia Hi Fi is now contracting their repairs out to none other than The Geek Squad. For years Magnolia has been known all up and down the west coast as a high end audio/video store that is knowledgeable and responsible with repairs done by their own people or experts in the field. Now all they can assure us is they oversee the quality of the work, (eg: send it back to the Geeks when they mess up).

It's funny how when Magnolia caved and let Best Buy purchase their company after the warehouse electronics store craze they were saying things to their customers like, "At least we don't clutter the store with shopping carts." If I had my choice, I'd take shopping carts over Geek Squad repair any day.

What scares me most is that I know, for a fact, there are people that go into these stores with absolutely no concept that a Wii game will not work in a Playstation 3, and a PS3 game won't work in an X360. I understand not everyone is a gaming and tech guru, but that just seems like something you should know.

My one and only experience with geek squad was when I was renting a house with 4 other guys during college. All the rooms in the house were pre-wired with cat-5, so all we had to do was move our computers into our rooms and hook up(all but one of us had a desktop). It was about that time that we discovered that the main router fed the two computers downstairs, and then split to a hub upstairs which fed the other three. The hub upstairs was bad, so we headed for Best Buy for a new one. One of my roomies asked a GS Agent what he would recommend as a decent multi-port hub, and his response was "well, you can get a hub, or we could just install wireless at your house for $165".

We told him, no, because 1) we almost all ran desktops and we'd rather have hard lines and 2) we didn't want to spend the extra money (because college students need that cash for beer). We just told him we'd rather just get the hub and be on our way. His response was "OK, but you guys would be much better off with wireless". We said no, we just wanted a good recommendation and asked if he could point us in the direction of the network hubs. Instead of doing what we asked, he proceeded to then press us more on wireless, hand us a pamphlet, and continue to pretty much spin every question we asked into something about wireless. We ended up just walking away, and buying our hub for much cheaper than a wireless installation. It worked great, but after that I vowed never again to deal with Geek Squad. Too pushy and too much of a pain.
