Is it just me, or do most games depend on special effects, graphics, and blood and gore, without even considering game play or storyline? this is what I like most about retro games, they always have great game play and a good storyline, they don't have good graphics, but they still come through on the most important part, game play, I think this is why so many over-hyped games become total garbage, people get excited when they see good graphics because thats all they can see in the trailer, and then they buy the game only to be completely disappointed. Just like Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed, yeah they have their good values, halo 3 depended more on multiplayer than the campaigns though, and I don't find it as much fun as the previous two, Assassin's Creed, depended on showing off the free running option and graphics, and actually did have an ok storyline with good twists and such, but was missing so much in game play, and there are so many things the makers could have changed to make it a better game, but it still isn't the master piece people thought it would be.

Does anyone else agree?

Boy, you take blood and gore's name in vain and I will stick your arm through and industrial meat grinder and eat what comes out.

I agree that most new games, especially FPS games, seem to focus more on being pretty rather than making a game that lasts longer than 5 minutes.

Blame it on the advent of 3D, and the 3D weaned generation(I:E scond gen console kids) who seem to forget that gameplay and storyline will always be better than flashy graphics. Up to this day I will always stress out that Baldur's gate 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>Oblivion with gazillion of mods and patches attached to it.

I don't mind blood and gore, the problem is when people use that and good graphics to start hype, but never come through with a storyline

The graphics has the same importance than storyline or gameplay. A game this days should balance this 3 things
