I just installed Doom 3, never played it before. Shat bricks. Looking for something else along those lines. Scary games, specifically for PC. What would you recommend?

My two favorites in that genre are System Shock 2 and Aliens vs. Predator 2 (Mostly the marine campaign). They both had great atmosphere.

If you're looking for something scary that will consistently make you jump a mile, try F.E.A.R. It has a mood such that you will literally jump at your own shadow, made possible by their wonderful lighting methods. It has a great story and great gameplay, but can get confusing at times. For freeware, if you have Half-Life 1, play the mod Afraid of Monsters. I haven't even gotten far enough to meet a monster yet and I can only play for a few minutes before getting scared. Finally, Killing Floor. Not especially scary, but it can be if you don't watch your back.

Only recommendations I could give would be Bioshock, F.E.A.R. and Prey, but none of them are that scary. Bioshock uses decay and atmosphere of Rapture to create paranoia, while F.E.A.R. doesn't try to hide the fact Alma would leap out of your monitor and slap you across the face if she wasn't a digital character. Prey just makes you nauseas, and immersed. It managed to creep me a tiny bit out due to the sudden changes in enviroments. But for the ultimate chill, seek out some of the older games. The ones that used sprites instead of 3D characters. There really isn't anything scarier than seeing a two dimensional .jpg image creeping through a swamp, about to attack you.

Side note, but from what I can tell the Penumbra series was designed specifically to make you go check your heartbeat each minute. There's a huge amount of those "Oh, good thing I'm safe in here", followed by the immediate Alt-F4 combination when a creature leaps at you from a vent.

Immediately thought of it as soon as I saw the title. I never played it in the dark, too scared too =p and yeah F.E.A.R. is actually pretty scary, but not as scary as Doom 3. The difference is that F.E.A.R. is mostly jump-scenes, while Doom 3 is just plain scary

Thanks for the suggestions. I've heard a lot of stuff about F.E.A.R., if I can find a demo or something I'll look into it.

When I first played Bioshock it was scary, but man, it doesn't even begin to compare to Doom 3 (also got the expansion).

That's got to be the best game, and specificly part of a game, to play in the dark! Motion sensor jitters ftw!

If you have a fairly high end rig, give Cryostasis a try.
