What happened to helicopter simulations? Did they die with Jane's? I'd love to try one out but is there even a chopper simulation out there that you can play on XP? I don't care that much about graphics, but if the graphics would be on par with lets say Falcon 4.0: Allied Force that'd be great. Note that I mean attack helicopters, so don't suggest MS Flightsimulator or something like that :).

I guess I can take up this question while I'm at it: Is it only me that's very sad that modern combat simulations are practically dead? Are there even any new (fixed wing or chopper) simulations on the horizon? And why do you think it's this way? I think it's because the learningcurve is extreme. I plowed through most of Falcon 4.0's manual on 550 pages (took me 3 days) before I even started the campaign! And I knew pretty much about modern fighters to start with. I havn't played Falcon 4.0: AF for about 6 months now but I'll start playing it again tomorrow when I get my Saitek X45, so I'll probably end up reading the damn manual again ;). IMO one of the charms of the game is that it's so hard to play (well, atleast hard to learn), it makes you more proud when you complete an unusually tough SEAD strike. But once you know how to play Falcon 4.0 it's probably the best game ever, I can't even explain how kick-ass that dynamic campaign is!

Yeah, it's sad that they stopped producing high-quality simulations. The last helicopter-sim I played was Gunship!, a classic series. I am also a bit disappointed that noone uses the capacities of modern PC for WW2 Air-combat simulations. I took a look at the new Battle of Britain (anyone remember the first part?) and couldn't see much of a difference to European Airwar. World War 2 fighters which is very old already seemed to be much better in several aspects.

I never played Falcon 4.0 but I remember playing 2.0, an extremely difficult game. That is probably why they stopped producing them. They figure that people these days want some short-lived fun without any manuals.

Because on actual battlefields, helicopters only play rather unintresting roles, such as support for infantry, escort and anti-tank, that rather limits the possiblity of games, but there is one coming out which I'm looking forward to, "Lock On: Black Shark"

should be out late this winter, early spring.

Dear God. Black Shark looks awesome. Even if helicopters play uninteresting roles, you can't really notice it from those shots. I still play Modern Air Combat every once in a while, and I am so picking up Black Shark when it comes out.

While blackhawk will be fun I'm sure, it's not as if it's going to be nearly as exciting as playing Lock On or flaming cliffs in a jet, simply because it's not the same type of action, gunning at the ground can only be so fun and still keep it realistic.

Here is one game I'm currently longing for... Whirlwind of Vietnam whirlwind-of-vietnam-20050824042328852.jpgwhirlwind-of-vietnam-20050824042318446.jpg Get more shots of it here. I really can't wait to give this game a shot, it has most of the stuff I would want in a game, Flying, Choppers and Vietnam :).

Commanche 4 has options to make flying very easy as it is in games like BF1942. You can also play with realistic settings (that's what simulations are good for!) but it will probably take you some time to get it right.
