What does the Fox say?

OK, Now I have a problem, which I can't fix.
I've just gotten Splinter Cell 1 (Battlefield 2 came first.), and it keep crashing on me.
I think it is the third CIA level. The Server room level, but it may be the second CIA level. Either way, the level object is to get my gun, after breaking into CIA headquarters.
Shortly after the start of the level, I reach a dark hallway. There are doors on both sides, and it dead ends into a another hallway, which curves around to either side.

When I go the left way, I come to a room with a lot of guards, and no easy way around. I don't have a gun, so I can't shoot my way through either.
When I go right, there is a guard booth, with a glass window. Another guard walks up to the window, before I can get through. They start a conversation, and it always ends the same. "We can't run this place on pocket change."
General Protection Fault.
Then I'm at my desktop. I've got a MSI KT6V, using the Via KT600 chipset, and a Sempron 2400+. A Geforce Mx440 64mb AGP 8x card, with the 77.72 official nVidia drivers. I have installed the Via 4in1 drivers, and they are the latest, as far as I can tell. I also have DirectX 9.0c. I'm running Windows 2000 Pro. Hey, its better than paying $200 bucks an upgrade, for XP. They are almost the exact same anyway. Except for XP Home, which is a Downgrade.
I've run it at the highest level it will let me, and at the lowest. I've adjusted my audio hardware acceleration down, and then back up. No change.
So, can anybody give me any suggestions? I would rather have it work, than have to figure out how to time it. If it can be timed...
