Hey guys, :cya: Just beat Dark Messiah yesterday.. what a blast that game was :bows: . Ive always been interested in playing around with making maps and was wondering if anyone knows how to make a map. I see there are a few maps already made but I cant seem to find anything on the internet how they were created. What tool was used? I read that a "Modkit" was going to be released with the game, but havent found it. Thanks in advance for your help. :)
Maps for Source games are made with Hammer Editor and the Source SDK (both from Steam).
Hammer is basically the old Half Life Editor given a spanking new feature set (for HL2). Dark Messiah uses Hammer and Source SDK. Get them from Steam by going to 'Tools' and downloading 'Source SDK' - this contains Hammer Editor, as well as other useful utilities. There is a lot of online help available from within Hammer (you'll need an active online connection) - and read this to get your Editor correctly configured.

I will point out that Dark Messiah runs on a highly modified version of the source engine, and its very probable that the Source SDK wont be able to create maps that are usable for DMoMM. Alot of plugins arent working for DM which did work with HL2 and CS:S so its quite likely that maps may also be different.
I appreciate it guys, I have some interesting ideas for maps that I'd like to create. I know it will be a lot of work, but I'd like to try to make a short single player campain eventually... we'll see where this takes me. Thanks again guys!:)
Ive checked, an there's no config for Dark Messiah in Hammer, so how are people making the mapS? Is my SDK just stuffed?
The official tool to create maps ect has not been released yet, therefore there are no maps at the moment. There are about 4 maps made to work with the demo, and I beleive the SDK for source works with the demo. No maps for the full game have been created yet.
Ah ok that makes more sense, although its still confusing as to how they got the objects an things in the map using Hammer...
Well, the thing with the 4 maps that have been made is that basically....they dont have objects. Or textures. Its literally just the terrain, and I believe 2 or 3 of those maps are literally squares.
They were made so that people could spawn lots of creatures ect and have huge battles without lag. Because there are no textures ect, theres less to render so the game can run faster and having that many NPCS wont slow the game down.
A couple of the maps had "spawn buttons" that let you spawn things from DMoMM into the world. Like the oil jars, and barrels ect.
Cool stuff. I cant wait for them to release the SDK though :P

Most of us are waiting for it. The thing about making maps, earlier on the tools was (says Mana) placed (maybe by accident) in the dark messiah beta, however sometimes making a map can be as simple as... Some minor tweaking to make it run neat on DM Compile normal way Hexedit some byte's play :) (cant remember if it was DM SP, DM MP or DM Demo that worked fine on)
