Please spare a minute of your time small questions that will make a big difference, thanks. What’s this all about? I am a Student in Multimedia Design; my degree level studies require a thesis. This survey is part of that requirement. As such I would ask that those inclined to participate (to those I am extremely grateful) abide by the set rules. This is a serious investigation that will contribute towards my degree study. What is the Goal? This questionnaire was implemented to investigate current theories held on the multiple and changing relationships of player and character in game. It forms part of a further study upon aspects of immersion and engagement within gaming media. The aims of it are to explore and assess gaming media past and present. Ultimately I would hope studies such as this should prove useful in maximising our enjoyment of gaming, lending its uses to gamers and developers alike. Your information, where does it go? Your contribution will form part of a statistical analysis backing up theory work. All that will be used is numerical and statistical results, no personal data will be used in the study apart from age ranges. The collection of personal data, i.e. name will only be used for separation and collation of findings, nothing more. Rules 1. Do NOT participate if you have little or no experience with games. 3. Only answer in the directed manner. Just copy the post and add info and reply thanks. begin ................................................................................ 12. Is the ultimate goal of Video Gaming to replicate the real world in all its glory? If not please sescribe why briefly?

Answer= No, not necessarily. A game can be meant to create a world of pure fantasy with the developer's imagination being the only limit. It can have elements of reality, but if it is this type of game, it should focus more on a mystical theme and attempt to draw the player in with a sense of curiosity that would not be sparked by an encounter with real-world phenomonons. The developers have more freedom because they are creating a whole new world and environment within that has yet to be explored and has more in the element of surprise and intrigue than the recreation of an actual setting in the real world would.

Is the ultimate goal of Video Gaming to replicate the real world in all its glory? If not please describe why briefly? Answer= No, I don’t believe so. Why? Well, because I have always felt that games were meant to whisk you away (if you will) to a different place to essentially, escape reality for a period of time. Ultimately allowing the player to be someone completely different, in a different world and do things that they necessarily would never be able to do in the 'real world'. I doubt video games will all attempt to replicate the real world as there isn’t that much scope for originality and with so many games on the market, for some companies, originality is the only thing they have to make their products stand out from the millions of others on the shelves. :lookaround:

B (I think I understood what this question was asking...) ................................................................................ 12. Is the ultimate goal of Video Gaming to replicate the real world in all its glory? If not please sescribe why briefly? Answer= Yes. And no. Both. And neither. A few games do intend to be as realistic as possible (Operation Flashpoint, Microsoft Flight Simulator), whilst others are far from realistic (Serious Sam, Jedi Knight Series). I personally think games should lean away from realism, rather than towards it. The only realism you really need is enough to allow players to relate to their environment (sky is up, floor is down, gravity makes things fall, cars go vroom, bombs go boom); after you've established the basics, they should just go wild, or at least exaggerate realism a little. Attempting to be too realistic can limit a developer's imagination. I play games for entertainment primarily, but also to escape from reality. Because reality sucks, man! ............................................... Saddens me somewhat that this future games developer hasn't once asked whether we consider storyline and narration to be remotely important...
