It's been a long, long, long time since I played a Battlefield game, and I really like the look of this new one, especially the period in which it is set.

Is this game good for newbies to jump on board with - and what's the game like generally?

I haven't played it yet, but I can tell you it ain't gonna be ArmA. If you've played one FPS, you've played them all. Just hop on board.

You won't have any problem.  It's just Battlefield 3/4 with a WW1 skin over it.

The BF games were always intended to be accessible for the mass market. Just need to figure out some good spots on the maps and take the right class and you can generally do pretty well without a lot of training.

I recommend the medic class to start off, you can play it safe and heal/revive your team while ranking up to get better equipment.

Funny since BF has always been frustrating to me to play.  BF 2 was especially punishing to me starting out with flying vehicles being nearly impossible to control with K+M, and I always felt like a drag on my team having a poor KDR.  I never could get into BF as much as I tried and gave up around Bad Company 2.

I actually quite liked the Bad Company 2: Vietnam expansion.  And the vanilla MP wasn't too shabby either compared to the later games.  Admittedly BF2 took a bit of getting used to but it had a good range of strategic options for base wars.

BF3/4 I really can't stomach largely because it was made for consoles and EA basically gave PC the afterbirth.

BF1 looks like fun, I never had interest in the series after 1942. If I had a PC I'd get the game, but for now I stick to my laptop and simply don't game a whole lot.

Bad Company 2: Nam was great! I bought it just for fun at one point and played it a lot. Got really good at it too, especially the vehicles. I'm pretty sure some of the old forum crew got together for a few rounds of Bad Company 2 back in the day occasionally.
