That is- I'm not particualrly interested in the current gaming scene. For me the new breed of games don't really appeal. Why? Im not sure, but new games seem "cold" to me. I'm not denying that they're technically accomplished, far from it, but they just don't find them as entertaining as the older breed of games.I also think it's possible for graphics to be too good. If everything on screen looked like a photograph, which is seemingly what most developers are striving for , then it would, to me anyway, be boring. No imagination would be required to immerse yourself. All the work is done for you, and imagination atrophies.I like games like Rainbow 6 and Thief because the graphics have character. Everyone is obssessed with the way graphics look, but few seem concerned with the "feel" of graphics. The original Rainbow 6 has the feel of a game made when technology is making exciting advances.. In a way it might be like comparing Impressionist painters to othes who strive for realism. Of course Impressionist paintings don't have immense "realism" but they have lots of "feel". That's why I prefer the games of say 1998-2001 to recent games. Your imagination is required more to fill in the gaps. And the graphics are still aesthetically pleasing ( to me anyway) People often comment that 1999 games have "bad" graphics. I don't think they're "bad" at all, they'e just not as good as recent games. It's like saying finding a $50 note on the ground is bad in comparison to finding a $100 note. It's not bad to me, it's still $50! I realise that I must be in a minority, and if some may view it as a rather conservative, staid viewpoint, and I could fully see your point of view. After all if no-one was continuously striving for better graphics, then the games industry would stagnate fast. So all hail technological advances And you might argue that I'm also being "sentimental" about older games. But I can't deny the fact that I prefer more "vintage" games to cutting edge ones. But that's just me.

I used to think like that for a while but then alot of good games came out and i got back into the current gaming scene.

Imo, its not that there is anything wrong with current games, but more that you are getting bored of the same old FPS (or whatever) forumla and need something new.

Try out some types of games which you would not normally play and you might be suprised as to how much fun you can have.

I understand what you mean Brian, although as Metal Militia said you're probably getting bored of the same FPS games over and over again only with better graphics.

Depending on what the game is that I am playing, I almost always strive for beautiful graphics. I personally feel that they enhance the gameplay, be it fantasy or reality-based, with an even more realistic quality. The graphics bring an element of life to the new games that is abscent from many of the classics. In many of the older games, with their older graphics engines, I feel more removed when I play.

I somewhat felt that way, and I must tell you, playing Half Life 2 has completely changed my mind. It feels like a totally new experience, and is probably the best recent game that I have played.

Well, the last game I played that was a significant enough of a diversion was RollerCoasterTycoon, and SimCopter. More recently I've been playing Frozen Bubble, and GLTron, a few cool games as easy to pick up as solitaire.

I am myself getting tired of the same old FPS. Half-Life 2 doesn't seem to be original enough for me.

I'm just tired of the same old fps genre. Like ww2 games, they just keep churning out the same old crap over and over. I think the reason todays gaming industry is lacking is because the games do not require any skill whatsoever. I flew through half life 2 and I only remember dying a few times. Older games like counter strike 1.6 and quake 3 were unforgiving and very challenging to the novice. Thats why you kept playing because you wanted to be the best. Even the new counter strike is weak, I can play it and be on the top of the team ALL THE TIME. It has to be the most random game I have ever played in my life.
