RTS a genre that I'm just getting into (have logged several hours on AEIII, B&W2, and now, RoN). There are a lot of these games out there, and several with good looking 3d graphics. Some people think that they are just more of the same though, and that there hasn't been a lot of real evelution. I'm wondering which of these is the best according to your opinions. If you recommend one besides any of the above listed...just let me know in the thread.

I never played DoW, BFM2 or EE2. Between Act of War and Generals I will have to go with Generals+ZH. I played it for more than a year regulary. It had some great player made maps and the community is good.

AoW, I think, was underrated. It was a solid game. The story was belivable, and graphics were sweet, and the gameplay was fun. It never grew a large community or drew alot of players, sadly.

If you're just getting into the genre, you might want to check out Age of Empires 1 & 2 (you can get them both in one these days I think), Empire Earth 1 (DON'T get EE2, ever), Rise of Nations, any of the Total War series (many favour Rome, but I personally preferred Medieval, but it's up to you -- may as well try 'em all though, eh?) and the Command & Conquer series (you can get the entire series (including Generals) in a recently-released collection pack now).

If you like castles, and you like in-depth and realistic simulations, also try out Stronghold (I loved that game, but it's a niche market). The makers of Stronghold are trying to screw up their own series by making the next edition into a fantasy game, but the first one (and the second one also) were excellent castle management simulations. Don't worry -- there's fighting in it too. Build a castle and defend it from a siege, or attack a castle for yourself.

God bless these forums. I've had the most solid requests. I'm totoally new to the genre, not to mention gaming. RoN, Age of Empires III, and B&W2 are my only experiences with it. I've liked them all, RoN and B&W the best I think. I'll try out some of your recommendations...thanks.

The games in the poll are based on the small amount of research I've done. From what I've seen they seemed to be popular titles and I was considering buying at least one of them. I got EEII from er...a source...to test drive it and it is really annoying. Intense population restrictions, and just seems kind of complex. I like RoN, AEIII better. C&C looks sweet. I'm going to buy the First decade pack right away. I'd still like to see BMEII just because I like LOTR.
