Alright, simple question.

A family member gave me Kingdom Hearts II as a gift recently but probably didn't realize that I don't own the first game (if they even realized they were getting KH II). So, is the story coherent enough on its own to still be enjoyable?

I tried to read through the wiki article of the first game's story but it sounds a bit convoluted...

Eh, I would be inclined to go pick up the first one, and play that first. It'll make a whole lot more sense.

Good news is, the first one should be pretty cheap when you find it.

Yeah it may as well be a final fantsay. Pick up the first one like Al said. Without the storyline you will be lost and most likely bored.

I'm just in exactly the same boat as you, vantage! I recently lent KHII off a friend, thinking it was KHI. Now I think I'm gonna buy the first one, if only to make sense of the story :)

Yep. Pick up the KH first. I tried playing KH II before playing the first and got confused about half an hour into the game.

I've never played it, but I'd say to pick up the first one. I will never have any interest in this series until Square Enix lets you use Lady and the Tramp as vicious attack dogs.

I guess it is on amazon for only $20. Might be worth it.

Now that would be great to see... but everyone knows that wouldn't happen very soon. I mean Square Enix wouldn't allow it ;) However if you have played the second game, and you want to play the first game to understand the story, then it may be worth buy the first game.

It would be like starting Final Fantasy 9 on the 4rd disc...
